As a MINECRAFT newbie I was pretty intimidated by some of the fancy auto-harvesting farms I saw on YouTube. I wanted something simple and straightforward, without all the redstone gadgets, which I don't know anything about yet. This is the self-harvesting newbie-friendly farm I came up with. The design is pretty obvious and trivial, but hey, I've only been in Minecraft for a week now.
On Edit: DOH! I forgot to mention the obvious fact that to harvest the whole field you only need to dump a bucket of water on the center block of the hub, wait a few seconds, and then remove the water block.
This little farm produces more wheat than I need to keep well fed.
Good work. Simple, efficient, but aesthetically pleasing. My self-harvesting farms always look so utilitarian.
Once you get redstone down, you can place a dispenser in the middle. Trigger once to start the water, trigger again to stop.
Thanks!
Or maybe I could set up a long enough redstone delay chain (I haven't started learning about redstone yet) to turn the water on and off every 4 or 5 game days and a water conveyor to carry all the produce to a waiting hopper. Hmmm. Of course that doesn't solve the problem of re-planting the garden. For that I need some kind of seed spitter. hehe.
It doesn't appear to have anything on the edges, what about a water stream that moves all the wheat to one corner?
Nice design!
Thanks.
It turns out all I need to do is to make two opposite corners of the trench lower and the third corner lower still and all the harvested wheat drains to a single corner of the trench. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oi, do you want to change the world? Yup
Then get off your bottom and see how many things you can do to help the environment.
Nice design!
