I have always been interested in just how open the game minecraft has been. Since buying the game two years ago while it was still in beta 1.3, i have been on multiple servers, built several projects, and have been a server admin on two different mid size servers. But, i wanted to build something a bit realistic. I haven't always been interested in building medieval buildings and structures, but instead focusing on modern designs. In my latest project, i wanted at least 90% of the buildings to be powered by redstone lamps. I also wanted them to all be connected to one central power source so i could easily turn all of the city's lights on and off. My biggest obstacle was the idea of a three block spacing between the ceiling of the lowest floor, the 1 block high gap to place all of the wiring, and the floor of the floor above the wiring. I was concerned that it would not look great, but i have proven myself otherwise. Each street has it's own switchbox, so that a particular street can be shut off. The two tall buildings have their own. Back before i started this project, i was playing around with worldpainter, creating a 4000x4000 continent that was also realistic. That map is used in this project, and a picture of it should be down below. In this map, i used tree schematics from the actual trees in minecraft i.e. Tall oak, birch, jungle scrub and the pine tree from worldpainter. I also created some small islands around the continent. One of them now has a working lighthouse .
I would hate to see this map go to waste. I would love to host a server, but i simply do not have the time to do that. If anyone wants to use this map, please let me know. Please also note that this map is still being actively built. Thanks, Simcityguy
First screenshot of the city, facing out to the west and the sea
Second screenshot, showing the city facing the east
A residential street, where the lighting is provided by redstone lamps
A bridge and tunnel entrance on the way out of the city centre. Note that the redstone current flows above the white wool to the lights
Land tunnel entrance(other tunnel exit to the one above), where the ligthing inside is also redstone powered.
The city with the power cut off, looking towards the northeast
City centre, screenshot 2, facing east. Note that the building in the far left still uses glowstone, as this building was one of the first built. It will eventually be converted to redstone lighting.
Residential street, blacked out along with the city
Same bridge and tunnel heading out of the city in blackout
Same tunnel entrance, in darkness. That is one very brave pig.
The city's power source, as i didn't want it just coming from nothing
The map of the continent. As you can see, it is heavily forested and has an alpine divide in the continent(although i haven't been to them much, it does snow there, and hence why you cannot see much snow).
As you can see in the youtube video, i can easily switch on and off the lights. Please note that this video was done quite a while ago, and the city has very much changed for the better. Please excuse the poor video quality, i need to find a better video recorder.
Thanks for looking at my redstone powered city, and i hope it inspires you to build something great.

UPDATE: I have made a new flyover of the city, as of the 20th of July. In the video, it shows all of the city, and the lighting. I plan on creating more buildings in it.
I also apologise for the not too great video quality, but it is night time, so i guess it's excusable.
The space between the floor and ceiling of two different rooms. This provides room for the redstone current to reach the lamps that light the floor below.
The redstone shaft that extends from below ground level to the top. This supplies the redstone current upwards. This is achieved by placing redstone torches on top of stone blocks in a vertical column. This is an example from the large quartz and redstone buildings. Each gap you see is the cavity between two floors. Smaller buildings have much narrower shafts, to save space.
Inside the power plant(Just for fun, i didn't include this image last time)
Part of a new suburb I'm building, south of the city(close to the power plant)
27/10/13 NEW IMAGES
Part of the new city council/municipal/governmental buildings (currently under construction)
A new English style town housing development backing onto the north of the city
Part of the transcontinental highway, linking up the east to the west, also connects the western(Large city) to the newer eastern city, images for that below
Eastern city (in construction) that has a natural harbour, kind of a lighthouse, industrial workshop and part of a train station. Also features the first dwelling ever built on the map
Images of the custom terrain environment
This map is also going to be used for a server. More details coming soon.
It Looks Like A House When You You Point It Out That Far o.o And Why Is The Island So Big?
Good question, Protocall10. I created a large island, or more like a continent, that i could use as a map to continue building on for quite a while. At the time of writing, the large city has not changed significantly, but i have been developing other parts of the continent, such as building freeways/highways that cross the continent, and have been building on the eastern side of it as well, with a few towns. I plan to keep on building until i get bored of it. It's been the only single-player map I've been building on for about 6 months now
Hello all, i updated my forum post, and posted a new YouTube video featuring a flyover of the city I plan on creating more buildings in the city as well. Thanks everyone
This map will be used on an upcoming server and is no longer available for use. More information about this server coming November 1st. Stay tuned.
That's right, we are partnering up to turn this awesome map into a server! At the moment it's in the planning stage, but we are working as quickly as we can to get it started. On the flip side, i am adding a few more photos to the OP. As creepersquared has stated, the map will be discontinued as a personal work in progress to a server, which will be open publicly for all. Thanks everyone, and definately "stay tuned"

You said this is still a WIP map, what else are you planning on adding?
Praise be to Spode.
