For a while now, I have known that Steampunk means Victorian Architecture advanced by strange technology beyond its time.
Dishonored, the game that this city is based off of and whose name is originally from, grasped this idea.
Because of this, I decided NOT to fall into the Medieval City or Modern City craze, and chose to represent Steampunk at its finest.
I chose to build Dunwall.
A sprawling city of both beautiful stone and utilitarian designs, Dunwall is the capital of the Empire of Isles, ruled by an Emperor or Empress. The City itself is in the grip of an industrial revolution fueled by newly discovered properties in whale oil which advance the technology. Dunwall has gone from a city lit by flames to a city lit by the glows of strange lamps and electricity.
I hope you enjoy following this thread as Dunwall is built, piece by piece, steadily into the shining metropolis it should be.
If you have skill at making HD texture packs, please post here!
have you tried worldpainter? I have been messing about with it recently, and it is super easy to create awesome looking terrain. Look into installing custom brushes too. it is also super easy.

If you want, you could pm me the dimensions and I could throw something together for you. does not take very long.
I used it once, with a failure. I also did a bit of terraforming on a server. By terraforming I mean suffocating two players who were mining with a huge mountain base that in no way did what I intended. I then managed to make a coastline..entirely from spheres. I do not trust my terraforming prowess
I think I will take you up on your offer, the base of Dunwall will be covered in buildings and all that anyway.

HOLY S***! That looks exactly like Gristol! Maybe increase the scale by 25 percent or around there, and maybe add rocky shores. Other then that, you are going to get a bloody temple dedicated to you!

Here is a close up view of teh Dunwall area. I enlarged it and put in rock/cobble beaches and cliffs. I would show you the whole thing, but Imgur is being silly right now.

Excellent!
A house I have been working on, a large Victorian/mild steampunk city house:
I'll probably create a texture pack that turns a wood into metal roof plating and cobble into iron, so I can make good-looking chimneys.
As soon as I have time I´ll try to build some steampunk-houses
I'm not working on a server, so I won't be able to include outside builds.
However, due to my knack of working slowly, most builds/city sections will be easily changed by popular demand. This is by far my biggest project, and I want it to be grand.
I also need a texture pack created, I was thinking about asking Glimmar but I think if he wanted to make a texture pack for me, he'd visit this place.
True, that, Chris.
Anyway, I've been experimenting with a 'Klaxon'
These devices will hang in the streets of my city and will ring repeatedly and light up when triggered by an Officer of the Watch or another person with access to it.
The klaxon itself:
The circuitry will be hidden in buildings, but if a server gets this map, then the klaxon can be accessed via rooftop and be deactivated. Adventure time!

Thanks for the support everyone!
The remaining 4 step plan steps are
3. Build Dunwall (longest and hardest part, second to getting a willing terraformer)
4. Share with the world and become famous and well-known (easiest part of the plan)

It looks difficult, but by blending texture pack with skilled scaling and block usage, I am confident that the city will look good.
You may wonder why I chose to build a steampunk city instead of a Napoleonic city or medieval city. The answer is that medieval cities are common, I don't want to encroach on my fellow shipbuilder's town ideas, and there is a lack of steampunk builds that use Victorian architecture.
My Dunwall will not be an exact copy, I am going to throw away some buildings and the most depressing elements and make it more like Dunwall before everything went to pot.
Now, with any luck, proper construction should commence over the weekend. I hope you will enjoy following the topic, and that you support my most ambitious Minecraft project to date!

I have been working on an 'example street' which shows off the aspects of the 'main streets' Things that will be mandatory in these wide streets are the street lamps (design is subject to change) the railways and the fancy sidewalk/cobbled road:
Suggestions and comments are highly welcome! I haven't received the world yet so I want to perfect the small things that will be common in the city.

The houses really remind me of the ones in Dunwall, but are you trying to recreate a major part of the city with Holger Sqare and the Flooded District?
Really good job, though.
Thanks mate!
As for the area, because the game designers were lazy and failed to give us maps or a wide area to explore, the way I am going to build the City is by locating key places such as Kaldwin's Bridge and Dunwall Tower and then adding main roads and filling in the gaps. The Flooded District will be restored and revamped into a prosperous, non-drowning area of Commerce. The 'example road' could be anywhere from Dunwall tower to the Whale Houses.
Thinking of which, I may pull strings in history and stop certain developments, especially this cursed whaling industry. As I said before, my Dunwall will be set before everything went to pot.
Thanks for the support, though! I hope I have answered yer question. If not, scream at me to get off that klaxon and answer it.

Been working on the Example Street, this time I made a 'proper' building, as in it has a name and serves a non-residential purpose. I called it the First City Bank and Trust, a throwback to Thief 2's own First City Bank and Trust.
I have managed to create a 'Wall of Light', an electrical 'wall' in the game that fries trespassers who go through it. My WOL uses firecharges and pressure plates. I'll probably advance the design to make it more unseen and easier to trigger, but here it is so far:
I've been testing it on unfortunate villagers and zombies. It works very well. *Evil Chuckle*
I still await the arrival of the world, so I delved into concept art of the game. The designers originally intended a much more historic and realistic approach to the game, for example this 80-cathedral skyline of their Dunwall plans:
I intend to make at least one part of this city in this kind of style, if not a larger portion, an 'olde town'

It is about 4000 blocks by 4000 blocks. I can increase or decrease the scale if you want.

Ah, true. I'll use Nether brick as iron instead, then. Now, on to step 2 of my not-so-famous Four Step Plan: Texture pack

Yes, but do you mean the house or the klaxon?

Maybe, but WOLs act as more of a crossing deterrent then anything else. But a tripwire would be impossible to get past easily, so I might try that.
On another note, OriginalWolf has completed the world, all he has to do is send it and his job is done. Then, my work commences.
