Omg this is so awesome, i've been looking for ships to use in my server or for my own personal enjoyment these are the best, sad there's no download link (wink wink ?) these are AMAZING and you sir, you are, wow, i've just never seen anything this good!
EDIT: Do you think you can make a 18th Century Corvette??? Thats my favorite Ship and i appriciate 18th century shps alot, I'm trying to make a mod that , well i'll just post the link all the info's there http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/806036-wip-neptune-craft-shipsnpc-ports-and-more/
Thanks!
(Also if u make the corvette may you get me a download ?? TY :D)
Ha, yeah. The only problem I have with the idea of a joint project like that is that we all build with our own styles and so it wouldn't end up looking very uniform. You'd have distinct, different groups of ships based on who'd built them. :/
I'm sure that being around each other's styles would eventually lead to an artistic compromise.

Ha, well, thanks for the praise! I haven't put any up for download for a few reasons. A big one is that I never got around to it/couldn't be bothered. But also I really want to try to get people building ships for themselves, and if they're just downloading and using mine then they're not learning. As I said to motrous on the last page, I'm thinking about it.
I've started a new ship today, a 2nd rate inspired by one of my favourites, the old warhorse HMS Barfleur. As ever, it's not a direct recreation but it should end up looking something like the Barfleur class. I've got the beakhead done, and it's looking nice and elaborate, much moreso than the 3rd rate I finished just a few days ago. But then since this is a 3-decker I've got more vertical space to play with to add to the ornate-ness. I've also got the port side of the hull done about halfway back. The tumblehome's shaping up nicely. Once I finish the port side that's the hull done since I tend to just copy, flip and paste.
Also, I'm really going to have to do another 1st rate. A 2nd really doesn't look that much different to a 1st, and I can see this new one I'm building putting my old 1st rate to shame.
Copy, flip, and paste? I do my ships entirely by hand, though for whatever reason you other shipbuilders have just left me so the Tuesday Yards look like I've been talking to myself. I do like to see criticism and comments, oddly enough.

Well, if I get my hull done twice as quickly by using World Edit, that means I can do two in the same space of time.
And there's nothing wrong with talking to yourself. Nothing at all.

My prolonged period of time with a lack of interesting people to talk to in person is no doubt contributing to my deranged mind. I used to be happily insane, now I'm just insane. I think. But my friend hates indecision, so I guess I am insane. I should never have agreed to move >.<
Ever consider doing a couple Cinema4D pics for yer own Architecturis Navili?
Beasty just did this extremely nice one on the Providence, and he should be doing another:

I've not really considered doing renders. I have thought about doing videos with my mate's folk band as the soundtrack though!
I've been working on my 2nd rate today, trying to improve on my stern design. Here's what I've come up with; the screenshots show the beakhead I've done as well.
Mainly what I've done with the stern is improve the shape. I've realised that I was narrowing the stern too much on my older ships, and so on this one I've made the stern cabins wider and tried to get them to follow the tumblehome. I realised that my very first 1st rate actually had decent dimensions on it's stern cabins - probably better than some of my recent ships - it's just they had a rubbish shape!
Still not entirely satisfied with the colouring, but I think it's probably working better than the more chequered pattern. What do you guys think?
I reckon I'm pleased enough that it's making me want to go back and rework my 3rd rates. The stern on the 74 and the stern and bow on the 64.
Nice! I'm following this topic now and as you said, it's a good idea getting people to build them there-selves, i used ur shipbuilding tutorial and tried making one, if u want i'l post a picture once the sails are done of course.:)
Yesh, your stern needs to be a bit bigger and flatter, like my own. And maybe use red wool as the side stripes for a Frenchie?
Other then that, looking very good.

The thing is, sterns were straight pretty much, except they leaned over the water a bit... so curving it like that looks a bit odd. Other than that, I like it.

Interesting that you're both saying the sides should be flatter. I thought the problem with mine were that they were too small and flat, which it why I made it bigger and sloped it. To start with I made it slightly bigger than it is there, but that was just too big.
Nearly every example that comes to mind - especially 3-deckers - is wider at the bottom than it is at the top, even if it's maybe a little too exaggerated on the one I've just done. The same goes for the lean backwards over the water. But then a lot of the subtle things in minecraft have to either be exaggerated or not done at all, and I thought this looked better than just a slab-sided box.
And, a Frenchie? This is based on one of the grandest vessels in the Royal Navy good sir!

Well, the English yellow is getting boring, we all know the French were better shipbuilders anyway, so I thought it'd be nice to see the sinister red and black rather then the bumblebee English pattern. Also, one 2nd rate looked very much like another, but your hull looks a bit more like one of those interesting French designs. Or, you can flatten her (the back of the stern, not side) in the stern and paint her yellow and black.
Either way, I don't think the current color scheme works very well, perhaps change your texture so that the yellow is toned down?

Well, my ships themselves haven't been following the Nelson Chequer since I've been using plain wood instead of yellow. Mainly because the hull is only one block thick and I want it to look like wood from the inside, which wouldn't happen if I replaced the wood with coloured wool.
The blocks on the stern are actually gold blocks, which I thought was appropriate for all the ornate stern gilding. Whatever colour scheme I used along the sides I'd want to have a liberal use of gold on the stern, because they were usually highly elaborate and gilded whichever navy the ship sailed for. I guess captains and admirals liked to show off. It just makes me think about how expensive they must have been to repair! I've tried other shades of wood planks and other wools, but I always drift back to some combination of black and gold.
And anyway, the RN were the only ones who built 2nd rates in any significant numbers. In many ways they were an odd sort of design so I can see why most navies didn't bother. I think it was the fact that the RN was so spread out that the "poor man's first rate" made sense to them.
But I agree, the French designs are fantastic. I can't think of any other naval architect that could come close to matching Jacques-Noël Sané. I may well build something inspired by the Ocean class at some point, as well as an 80 like the Tonnant class. But even if I do, I'll most likely do them in the same colour scheme as my other men o'war. These aren't supposed to specifically belong to any nation, they belong to my fleet. I want to stick them all together on one ocean as a battle squadron, and having different colour schemes might ruin the effect somewhat!
My ship names have mostly come from the RN or are RN-like names, just because I liked their naming. I've generally been using a lot of Slade's designs as a jumping board, but I've not been trying to match them too closely other than looking at things like number of gunports and the spacing of the masts. It's quite possible that this ship has ended up more like a Sané than a Slade without me intending to do it that way. In whatever case, she was inspired by HMS Barfleur and may well be named after her too.
I'll keep playing with different colour schemes for my merchantmen though.
And who knows, I might convert some to a different scheme for a rival fleet and set up some sort of battle diorama.
And as to the textures, I'm so used to this texture pack now that anything else just looks wrong. Though I have to say I have been tempted to cut and paste some of my favourite textures from KDS's other packs into my copy of photorealism...
I ment that you have your stern ROUNDING in the middle, it's like a side of a barrel - which they were not, they were flat. And angled a little all the way.
Yeah, okay. I might take that one out! It was more a bit of an experiment to try to make the stern more interesting, since most of my older ones have been pretty boxy. Good call.
i think it looks good, but as they're saying nothings perfect except for your other ships.. those are just amazing..... and hopefully this one too!
Ha, well I don't think they're perfect. I'm developing new little touches and techniques with each one I do, and it makes me look at my older ships and want to improve them. Like this ship with its improved stern that I've been discussing with these esteemed shipwrights. And the bows. Have a look at the bow on this ship, then my 3rd rate Vanguard, then my older ships of the line. My older bows are awful in comparison, and I'm more pleased with this one than I am with Vanguard's - though that is probably because I've got more space to use since this ship is a 3-decker.
Oh, and I missed your comment on the last page that you were using my tutorial. I'm always interested to see what people can build with ships in general, but especially if they've been following my advice. It means I get to see whether what I wrote actually made sense to other people! I'd love to see screenshots.

To be honest, I was never impressed by RN ship names. I liked Dauntless and the exploratory Endeavour, but I always thought that French names had more of the beauty of a ship in them, like the frigate La Fleur, the Flower. And Victory rings of pompousness, does it not?
And I suppose using wood stripes works better for the interior, but I will not change! But, the wood looks good with your texture pack. I tried using KDS but I switched when I saw my Endeavour with those...bands of "color"
As for the 2nd Rates, yep, poor man's first rate is the perfect way to describe them!
Also, have you noticed that when you choose italics or the like, type the word, turn it off, and continue with normal writing, whenever you press Backspace you go straight to the italic word?

Yeah, names will always be a matter of taste I guess. But I like the wide range. You go from things like Victory and Revenge through classical mythology with Agamemnon and Bellerophon, royalty with things like Royal George and Queen Charlotte, a stop off at famous battles with Ramillies and Blenheim and names inherited from captured ships like Temeraire and Ville de Paris.
I always thought Ville de Paris was an odd one especially - it's about as French a name as you can get, yet the RN gave it to a 110 gun 1st rate just because they'd briefly captured a French ship of the same name a few years before. She sank in a hurricane a few months after being captured, but by that time the name had entered the navy. I always found it interesting that they'd use a 'captured' French name on one of their biggest and most prestigious ships.
And yep, I get annoyed by quite a few things when typing replies on this forum. My backspace key never seems to do what I expect it to. Maybe it's been set up that way to make us better typers who get things right the first time?

I always liked Queen Anne's Revenge, a name taken from Queen Anne the Tudor. I've always had an affinity for vile ship names. What I do not understand is the Flying Dutchman. You can click on my banner if u want more info just summed it up mostly...
and i need ship models....
i'll probably just try to make more based on the one i just posted, but if i can use some of your ships, when or if the mod comes out this thread would get very famous, and i'd have really good ships instead of ... bad ones...

I forgot to ask earlier, i'm making a mod, that lets you drive ships and such, and buy them at a shipyard and fight and stuff,
You can click on my banner if u want more info just summed it up mostly...
and i need ship models....
i'll probably just try to make more based on the one i just posted, but if i can use some of your ships, when or if the mod comes out this thread would get very famous, and i'd have really good ships instead of ... bad ones...
