Swerv I really think this is the best castle project I have EVER seen. You do deserve the 55 rep on the post you made. Now I shall do +1! :biggrin.gif: Oh and when you are doith it can you please put the save up for download? If you want the world private thats fine. But anyway great job!
I have been watching this project since the height issue made you restart, and I have to say I am very impressed. Impressed with your dedication and determination to do it legit, and impressed with your building speed as well. I like how you plan things out before laying the first brick too, something I also do with my small "big projects" now.
I will say that a mob trap that will kill spiders may make sense for white wool supplement, though for the other colours obtaining the dye would kill your time advantage. Also, this has the advantage of not having to deal with so many sheep...
I was wondering when you would start running into performance issues with that many sheep, and did wonder how many could even be reasonably worked, so glad you figured that out. I think I would have tried to automate the disposal process (lava blade maybe?) but then I haven't had to deal with that many sheep, so it might be worthwhile to enjoy slaughtering them.
Anyhow, looking great so far. Keep up the great work

You can only spank a sheep to fix its pathing so many times before it dies. The damage, though small, adds up and to my recconing, mobs/animals dont heal over time. So the culling partially happens on its own, and I occasionally have to knock off a couple score extra.
And yes, eventually I will be putting up a world save for you all to climb around on.
PS, i am seriously considering a mob trap for the string, but the sheep farm is working so I'll keep at it that way until/unless I just cant take them anymore.
Ok, so yeah, a mob trap it is, I need to mine a couple bajillion more cobble for the furnaces to build the courtyards anyway. And Ive never built one before, so why not?
GF is hanging with her gal-pals tonight, so I should be able to crank one out before bed.

HA! Got it!
I will build a gravity type mob grinder (sky trap?) . But I will build teh spawning field immediately under my courtyards. there is already a 3-10 block high space between the ground and where the bottom of teh courtyard tiles will be, and the space is HUGE, almost 7500 square blocks.
So a couple questions about spiders...
1) do they take falling damage like other mobs?
2) can they climb glass?

1. Yes
2. Yes, spiders can climb any type of block.
I would, however, recommend against building a mob tower, because you will need to kill 4 spiders on average to get one piece of wool; and 12 on average to get the same as from a single sheep. Also, you'll end up with thousands of spider eyes. :tongue.gif:

I still think you should do the mob trap. If you make several and continue the sheep farm the wool will come flooding in. And as for the spider eyes, make an incinerator. Just make the falling chute 3x3 and the spiders will eventually fall. My mob trap works fine on spiders.

It is pretty common to find multiple cave spider spawners within activation distance of each other in abandoned mines. It would be an investment of time locating a spot with multiple spawners. Then you would have to build a trap, and depending on the distance from your castle you would probably want to set up a transportation system in the nether. You would also have to be willing to let Minecraft run while you weren't playing. But it would at least break up the monotony of feeding and shearing sheep.
I've got a set up that feeds me spiders from three spawners. I will load up my save and edit some more info in here about how efficient it is on a per minute basis.
edit: Looks like each spawner is producing an average of 5 string or 1.25 wool per minute. I've seen (and personally verified) a seed on reddit that had no less than seven (but more like nine) cave spider spawners that could all be activated at once. So even if you're super lucky you're looking at ten wool per minute in an ideal situation with spawners. You're probably not going to be that lucky.
additional edit: Since mobs stopped immediately moving around after spawning I'm not sure how efficient a set up for spiders you can make. I think they take a 2L2W1H area to spawn. There's probably plenty of youtube videos detailing making mob traps etc... You'd have to light up all the caves around the trap, find or come up with a design to spawn and kill only spiders, then of course build it... It would be a huge investment of time to set up a trap that would be worth while. Plus you'd have to visit the collection point pretty frequently if you didn't want to leave Minecraft running while you were asleep. Seems like you're either stuck with sheep, or looking at a moderate side project.
On a side note, in this picture..
You have pens for your colored sheep? If you're going to be shearing the sheep in those pens you'll have to replace the stone with dirt/grass so they can regrow wool(once you've updated to 1.1).

Thanks for the data Hippy. It supports my opinion that the reward isnt worth the investment. In the hours that I would have to spend to build the trap I could harvest thousands of wool from my already operational and massive wheat and sheep farms.
As for the stone meadow, even though I can't update MC until my height mod gets 1.1 support, I agree completely. And furthermore, I will be digging out one layer of the stone and replacing with dirt for purely aesthetic (and need more cobble) reasons soon anyway.
why not just use cobble? i did and it looks less plain then smooth stone i even added a little mossy cobble to give it the old look to it...and u dont need plans and blueprints...waste of time...mine was greifed after few days when i finished it...took tnt to it. make sure no one gets ur ip unless its on ur single player...but looks nice other wise.. good luck and try next to build the church of italy idk what its called but the pope lives there. lol big giant church and a huge court yard. its easy maybe ull like it
If you are after spiders for more wool. Check the Skyblock map in the map sections. A few have posted ways of making spider only mob drop traps that work very well leading to a high amount of string .
Included in this update;
Flattening "sheep hill" #2
Removing stone meadow
Upper and lower courtyards and courtyard staircase
Ladies Quarters Foundations
The entire outline is in and I've started constructing the massive courtyard stair case
and done
Lots of pics there... it takes a LONG time to build something like this 20-25 blocks above dirt with no fly-mod... a LOT of falling off and dieing.
This may not be the sexiest part of the structure but it (along with the courtyards) defines a LOT of the future parts and I need these in place before I can continue with placement of the main structures.

OK, just for the challenge I dare you to try this;
Build a flat 'roof' 12-19 blocks above dirt, on a rectangle that is ~70 X ~45... first stop, ~8000 stone slabs... cant help you there, sack up Sally, or go back to cheat mode... next stop, figure out how to lay them fast... and I can help there.
The diagonal method.
When you lay them diagonally, you can ALWAYS see a nice large piece of the blocks that you are laying to. And so action becomes bump forward, click, bump forward, click, repeat. much better than move, adjust, fine adjust, click click click, repeat MUCH faster.
You will still fall off though. Managed to snap this right before i died lol
LONG ways to go. /sigh. This part was very boring.
home stretch
and done
Final count;
two courtyards and the staircase... ~18,000 stone slabs laid double... not to mention about 450 torches.
The best part?
I know where my future tree farm is going to be :wink.gif:... and Im going to need one. after completely (almost) clear cutting the foot print for the whole thing Im still going to run out of wood before the halfway point.
the immense cavern under the courtyards is going to be perfect
the footings (necessarily laid before the courtyards were built)
and the full foundations up with floors in
so building the ladies quarters revealed a nice bonus for me. the foundations find themselves about 20 blocks high or more in most places. This is going to allow for a somewhat steep buildup on the 'revetment slopes' around the outside of the structure. I have messed around on this map enough now to know that at a 1:2 slope, i will be able to create little rock outcroppings and plenty of tree plantings and not hide teh structure at all.
The to of these walls is not the top of the structure... this is the top of the foundations, where the BOTTOM OF THE CASTLE STARTS!!

Does it have anything to do with Natural Selection? Or perhaps people being selected against?

Improved the sheep pens
Took down the rear stone hill (needed the cobble for the courtyard and other stone work).
before
after
notice that Ive begun to 'edge' the one block deep cut to speed up strip mining.
Next its pull out one layer of rock from the entire meadow
and replace with dirt
halfway
and done
Now if my height mod ever updates to 1.1 and I'm brave enough to risk another .jar catastrophe, I'll be able to regrow wool on my sheep.
