This topic is a documentation of a project I designed and built with a little help from friends. I am field expert in historical architectural theory and design, and I wanted to design a cathedral; I took precedents from Chartres, Amiens, Rouen, and Notre Dame de' Paris, and my experience studying and designing churches in real life, and constructed a model to scale of actual High-gothic to flamboyant style cathedral, as a fusion of all these concepts where they were compatible.
I also designed a fanciful crypt that is accessed from below the altar, which progress in three stages; there is a common hall, with 700 graves for all server members, a mausoleum stage with places for all mods and admins, and a cenotaph for the three founding owners. The cathedral also has accurate bell towers which you can climb for a better view, and walkable galleries under the roofing structure. The project is a full 128 blocks tall, from the peak of the crossing pinnacle, to the bottom of the crypt.
The grounds themselves were treated in an Italianate style, taking influence from the Villa d'este, Verona, and the Borghese gardens, complete with accentuated water features and curvacious gardens. The cathedral was designed as the centerpiece of a new city district in a larger urban context, so I also designed some urban fabric around it to be developed over time, in an Italian hill-town planning scheme. The blocks are a min of 21-24 tall, so anything built in them must be at least this tall, and have a continuous urban face at street facade. I also purposely made the blocks themselves large to allow for micro-urbanism within, so that design developers can have own private piazzas and alleys inside the block limits. All the major public spaces and piazzas and gardens are in place, but the bulk of the city fabric is still open to design by many parties. I marked all the places urban development will occur with brown wool to mark minimum height by districts.

I play Minecraft standing on the roof of my house with a laptop, completely naked, the wind lapping at my hair and genitals. It is very refreshing. The neighborhood watch loves me.
My jaw dropped lower with every picture I saw. The outside alone was impressive, and It'd be an amazing creation even if it was just a hollow shell, but as you toured the interior and the richly decorated corridors and chambers I could only think "Holy hell, it just keeps going!!!". It is clear that no effort was spared, no detail overlooked in the building of this massive construct and architectural masterpiece.
This is THE most impressive construction I have ever seen in Minecraft. (It is many orders of magnitude greater than my "Cubby the solid Cube of Cobble" made with the help of MCEdit)

Words can't describe how awesome that building is. How long did it take to build that? I mean, it took me about a week to build a slightly above average house... Out of 10, I rate this a 100. That is ridiculous. I especially love the insides, and the little details that help accent the structure as a whole. Please don't mind me borrowing tons of these ideas for my projects... Such as that decorative purple floor.
It took maybe 6 days to build the cathedral, and I took my time over about the rest of a month making the crypt, gardens and city, solving various technical problems as they arose. The funny thing is that I designed the church really over maybe a few hours, and spent the rest of the time working out minutia, and periphoral details.
I WAS going to come in here and complain about a somewhat arrogant sounding title but after viewing about 75% of the pictures that actually worked I can say that this may be THE, greatest Minecraft architecture ever.
Mind sharing the save? I'd love to toodle around inside and pick up some building tips. This is simply amazing, and I want to experience it first-hand :biggrin.gif:

I mainly used that title because I gave it a more accurate tile before, but no one read it, so I decided to give it a title people would have an outrage against, and want to put down, but open nonetheless, lol.

There is very much land near the cathedral city to build on, pre-planned and districted!

SMP isn't my cup of tea. If my internet was any slower I'd be on dialup, and I like to tear things apart to see how they're built... obviously not possible on a smp server.
