I'm posting to say how awesome this server is, the only other server I play on isn't pvp so it can't be compared. This is the most hardcore legit pvp server I've ever played. It's nice to be able to raid someones base for once. I love the fact that on this server if you kill someone, they obviously will try to get revenge on you, but they won't be swearing at you and stuff.
What I'm trying to say is that players on this server understand that everyone's gonna get raided sometime.
I can't log in, I just get the connection timed out error, is that what everyoe is getting, or is the server back up, and i can't connect right?

The hosts are saying that the server won't restart on the auto-schedule unless there are zero players on. Which is strange since there should be zero players when everyone is gone and unable to log in....
Explaining the issue to them and hoping they will resolve it.

Thanks for the link. That explains it perfectly. It also explains the extreme lag we were having before MP installed the SSDs. The memory leak ate the rest of the system memory, allocating it to nothing, and so the system was forced to use virtual memory but the seek time on standard HDDs is extremely low, which causes a loss in performance when it uses memory. But, the crashes also make sense to be related. I sent the info to YDS. This should also be taken up with MP. Considering it is java, there should be a way to run minecraftserver with max and min memory limits. If that doesn't work, then MP should also consider allocating more memory to their MC customers!

We need to stop speculating and start looking for solutions; after all, none of us are making 250k working at sun microsystems programming java. Still talking to multiplay. Forced restarts will be the crutch until we can get a permanent solution. The issue is getting a decent mod on multiplay - hey0 doesn't support the auto-restart plugin we need.
Could also indicate we need a map reset. We have alot of new players, and now understand the server much better and can probably provide a better admin service. If we reset the map it might stop the restarts if we keep the borders tamed... just a thought.
I personally don't want a map reset and I know those of my faction feel the same way. I've invested a lot much time in my base to have it die from a cause other than being raided.
I can maybe code the plugin you need if you can give me more details.
Hey, hit me up with some Coords to your base and I can make the map reset idea sound much better. :3

We need an auto-restart plugin (can't be a wrapper) for hmod build 133.

I have offered a solution for faster restart-response time. Anyway, the source of the issue is in the server client/java/notch. But, this issue would either be resolved or uncommon if we had more RAM on the server to extend beyond the memory leak. That's why I mentioned both Notch/Java and MP as part of the problem.
I don't like the server's community, at least when i logged in. Really, this is probably just saying that I don't like the general minecraft player.
Still, while servers like this sound pureist and pure fun.. It really devolves into mindless digging for resources and then mindless melee combat. I'd rather see something more like real minecraft. With building great objects. But then with PvP, and wars, and factions. But I guess the average player isn't capable of doing this without being told to do it.
I mean, just the natural progression of such a server: A city is built, destroyed in a battle involving TNT and fire, rebuilt and restructured. A massive pyramid is built and later restructured into a government headquarters. Minecraft has so much potential in SMP, but it always falls short because of immaturity (which generally follows open servers) and elistism (which generally follows servers with lots of rules). People could do amazing things with the game. But instead it always goes back to dull and lifeless things like chasing each other with swords or building house after house and pretending they will last forever.
Hmm? How about some real fun? Bah, I'm sorry. That would involve people working together and socializing to a degree. How would I ever suspect people in minecraft SMP would do anything that's not anti-social? Really, I think Classic was better. Classic is more enchanting. You don't have to bother with 8 hours of mining just to get started, among many other things.
Yeah map resets are like trying to raise taxes. It will never be popular but sometimes has to be done.
Anyways, I will do everything it takes to get these problems taken care of - but the LAST thing involves a server reset.
Would you guys be okay if we just saved this map and started a new one? We can always come back.
This may not fix the issue. We have been needing to restart the server since a day or two into the new map. It's related to uptime with the server, the overly large strings, memory leaks, and not enough RAM to extend beyond the leak. Minecraft client actually leaks up to 880MB/1024MB RAM. Who knows exactly what the server leak % is. It isn't long before my system starts to tap my 5400RPM HDD for /swap. I had a feeling that our lag from before our SSD swap was too 'predicable' to be network related. It's all because we didn't have enough resources to outlast the memory leak. You were right that SSDs would fix the lag, and it didn't make sense to me when I assumed we had enough hardware to run the tasks. Apparently we don't.
The server runs smooth but we're still tapping virtual memory on the SSD. Luckily, SSDs response time is similar to flash memory. But, then the server locks up after a while. My guess is that we're also maxing our allocated virtual memory.
It's a huge cluster of bs that stems from Notch's obsession with adding cakes and holiday capes instead of fixing bugs.

Agreed. Or, possibly find new hosts. But, that decision would be up to YDS.
At least this can be a good time for lost study, work, or social time lol

Was down 20 hours because of this odd java crash.
Definitely need to figure something out.
