I'm totally into JRPGs, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Shin Megami Tensei, Phantasy Star, Bravely Default, the Tales series, etc etc etc. For too long there hasn't been a server that can really capture the feeling of these classic games; over the past few months, I've set out to change that.
Megido: The New World
IP: 192.99.147.86:25662 (Version 1.7/1.8)
Megido features random encounters, linear story-driven gameplay, and a combat system reminiscent of turn-based RPGs. Upon first joining, new players name the protagonist and set up their statistics.
Statistics
HP (Hit points) - Health. If this reaches 0, your character dies.
MP (Mana points) - Mana. Used to cast spells
STR (Strength) - Affects melee damage
DEX (Dexterity) - Affects ranged damage
INT (Intelligence) - Affects spell power
VIT (Vitality) - Reduces melee damage taken
AGI (Agility) - Increases evasion, hit %, and fleeing speed.
LUCK (Luck) - Increase critical %, as well as a few hidden things
After stat setup, the player is promted to select a difficulty in the configuration section of the menu.
Difficulty can be changed at any time in the game, unless you lock it.
Difficulties
PICNIC* - Take 0.25x damage, deal 1.67x damage, earn 0.5x GP
EASY - Take 0.5x damage, deal 1.67x damage, earn 0.75x GP
NORMAL - Default difficulty
HARD - Take 1.5x damage, deal 0.67x damage, earn 1.5x GP
EXPERT** - Take 2x damage, deal 0.33x damage, earn 2x GP
*Can be unlocked using 1 vote ticket
** Can be unlocked using 99 vote tickets, or by completing the game once
After picking a name, setting up stats, and selecting a difficulty, the player is thrown straight into the story.
The first thing most people notice is their equipment- they have lore written on them. Like many other RPG servers, Megido has its own custom weapon/armor stats.
Weapon Statistics
Damage - Damage dealt per attack. Is split into "Melee" and "Ranged" damage on bows
Weight - The amount of energy (denoted on the XP bar) that is consumed per attack
Accuracy - The chance that an enemy will not be able to evade your attack
Radius - Deals partial damage to all enemies near your targeted enemy
Effect - Inflicts the listed debuff on your targeted enemy
Limit Break - Allows damage above 9,999 to be dealt
Armor Statistics
Defense - Blocks a flat amount of physical damage
Armor - Blocks a percent of physical damage
Evasion - Chance to completely evade an attack
Counter - Chance to deal damage to your attacker, damage increases with higher energy
Affinity - Appears on both Weapons and Armor; determines the elemental properties of the piece of equipment. Elements are explained in greater detail in-game.
In Megido, combat strategy is dominated by energy usage. On the XP bar, your energy is noted. Every time you attack, your energy will decrease by an amount equal to the weight of your weapon. The usage of items also lowers your energy. Energy will automatically regenerate after a few seconds, to a maximum of 100. There are also items that will instantly restore your energy.
Energy can also be used to regenerage MP. MP, or Mana Points, are represented proportionally on the food bar. Every time you cast a spell, you will use up a little bit of your MP. However, you can activate "Energy -> Mana Mode," which will convert your energy to MP over time. To activate this mode, shift+left click a spellbook, or type "/mpregen." Beware, as energy will not regenerate during this mode until your MP is completely refilled.
Spells can be purchased in shops in most towns, and have some very useful effects, like dealing elemental damage, revealing enemy stats and weak points, buffing and debuffing enemies, and healing allies. Spellbooks can contain between 1 and 16 spells.
Spell Usage
Left Click - Changes the currently selected spell
Shift + Left Click - Enables/Disables energy -> mana mode
Right Click - Casts the currently selected spell
Shift + Right Click - Shows the player a description of the selected spell
Megido also features a compelling storyline, featuring an alignment system. Decisions you make in-game will have an affect on which bosses you fight, how the story progresses, and even which ending you get.
Two of the main features of Megido are Forging and Fusing. In forging, you can use materials you've gathered in your travels to upgrade your weapons' stats. In fusing, you can take two weapons and combine them into a new one.
Megido also has Random Encounters, similar to those found in Pokemon and Final Fantasy.
As all good JRPGs do, Megido has an original soundtrack. With 80+ songs (as of 4/30/16) on the server, a unique song plays for every area and battle.
Check out Megido: The New World's first trailer here. It covers most of what's already been covered, but seeing gameplay in action is a little different than just hearing about it.
