WAR IN THE STORMLANDS: RAVEN SWOOPS IN ON THE ISLES
-Raven troops landing on the Stormland Isles before beginning the siege
In what is possibly the first major outbreak of war in the new world, conflict has broken out between the island Kingdom of the Stormlands, which lays claim to the throne of all Serveria, and the southern Brotherhood of Raven, a venerable host dating back to Map 3. Following a pre-war assassination of King Jalzara I by Headcrusher, the two states declared war on each other, though Raven quickly gained the initiative and upper hand by rallying an army North across mountains and seas, and landing a force upon the shores of the Stormlands. There the slaying of the King was repeated, and since then the occupying force has inflicted further casualties on the enemy with little to no losses of their own.
The details on how the war began are confused, but investigators from the Report present at the time of the declaration of war say that following the abdication of Father Headcrusher I, newly ascendent Father Nino began a search for new allies shortly after his coronation. Envoys were sent to the halls of the Stormlands, and in keeping with his claims on the Serverian crown, Jalzara returned a reply accepting the offer of alliance: on condition of a declaration of vassalage from Raven to the throne at the Stormlander Isles. Nino, eager to solidify his position amidst the turbulent South-West region, accepted.
The King of the Stormlands would not have long to savor the subjugation of his first vassal. Headcrusher, the former Father, released from his former responsibilities had at the very same time the vassalage was being negotiated been on his way North to the Stormlands, seeking to wreck havoc on the sea-washed Kingdom. And not a minute after vassalage was accepted and signed by Nino, Headcrusher assassinated Jalzara, derailing the entire agreement. Shortly thereafter, apparently in a furor over the vassalization of the once proud Raven realm, he returned to his nation to lead it in war against those who had sought to bring it to its knees in servitude. War, at last, has come to our lands.
CONQUISTADOR RAIDS IN THE HIGH ANDES: INCA EMPIRE UNDER SIEGE
-Incident in Ithlum, following an invitation by the King of the city, the Sapa Inca was ambushed and killed while a guest in his walls
Perhaps the most active conflict thus far on the server has actually occurred without a formal declaration of war, within and without the borders of the high mountain Solar Empire of the Inca. Also known as Tawantinsuyu in the local language, or “the Four Regions”, it had thus far staged a fairly isolationist policy between three other nations, the most densely populated region on the map. However, on August 2nd a small expedition of Stormlander conquistadors arrived in the rapidly expanding capital city of Cuzco, promptly slaying one of the builders, before declaring their creed and claim on the whole of Serveria. Decrying the Sapa Inca, ruler of the Inca Empire, as a pretender to the Throne, he challenged the Child of the Sun to combat. On the field, the end result was two Incans slain to one dead Stormlander before combat was called off and the raiding party returned to their islands.
In response to the unprovoked raid, the Inca Empire underwent a remarkable phase of expansion, doubling its population in less than a day. Meanwhile, claiming inspiration from the sun god Inti, Sapa Inca Tiberius Decimus Maximus inaugurated construction on a massive terraced fortress atop a floating island. The titanic project, despite its scope, was completed yesterday after exactly a week by utilizing a system of obligatory state labor known as mit'a, which saw the moving and erecting of immense quantities of stone. However, the effort, combined with other civic initiatives such as the construction of the extensive Inca Road, was harried every step of the way.
Other expeditionary parties, enticed by tales spread by Stormlander troops of the riches of Inca gold, ascended the sacred peaks of the Andes in search of fortunes. Conquistadors hailing from Ithlum, Shinra, even the erstwhile allied state of Raven, took to the high mountains to attack the rapidly growing Inca state. Several raids were defeated by forces led by the Sapa Inca, including the slaying of Shinra leader Ditronian and Father Headcrusher of Raven, but yet more resulted in casualties amongst the Inca civilians, who struggled to adapt to the constant and escalating ambushes and raids. A final raid, led by Ithlum despite a mutual defense pact agreed between themselves and the Inca, at last saw the declaration of a brief war to bring the conquistadors into the claimed areas of the capital of Cuzco. A large and experienced band, they quickly slew the scattered resistance in the city, before ascending to the incomplete mountain fortress where the Sapa Inca waited for them. Despite a spirited defense from the ramparts, the fortification was overwhelmed and the brief battle brought to a close.
Fortunately, despite the consistent forays into their lands, the Inca have at last completed their defenses, and with it secured assurances from Raven and Ithlum pledging an end to the conquistador expeditions. Only time will tell if the turbulent South-West has at last seen the glimmers of peace within its borders.
BATTLE IN THE CLOUDS: INCA SCORE DECISIVE VICTORY IN THE BATTLE OF OLLANTAYTAMBO
-The Inca Army advances towards the Stormlander Army in the Urubamba Valley, with the Sapa Inca at the lead
The Mountain Blade Report is pleased to bring you a special report on the recent Raven-Stormlands War, which has recently expanded well beyond the original combatants and causes. Reporting from the Front, War Correspondent dxsora2 was imbedded within the Stormlander siege camp, while Chief Editor Tiberius Decimus Maximus was posted in the cloud fortress of Ollantaytambo. What transpired in and around its walls can be considered the first major battle in the new map, with around 15 players in attendance. This issue of the Report will be followed with pictures and eventually video coverage of the battle as it happened, taken by MBR newcomer dxsora2!
Before we begin, we will look into the background of the then ongoing Raven-Stormlands War. Despite scoring significant casualties on the Stormlander forces arrayed around their islands, losses in skirmishes, attrition, and disease had weakened the far-flung Raven expeditionary forces considerably, leaving their numbers in parity with their foe. With so many troops dedicated abroad, the Raven homeland was left defenseless and victim to looting, killing of livestock, and the construction of propaganda structures around the capital to demoralize the homefront. As a result, a call was made to the Emperor of the Inca to help patrol the lands of Raven: one that was answered, with resentments towards the Stormlands going back to the early Conquistador raids in the Andes.
Upon finding Stormlander troops in the Raven plains, the Inca sounded the conch shells and began beating the war drums. A small army descendedupon the unorganized troops of House Jalzara, and after a brief chase were slain. With war now in full swing, the respective armies regrouped in their homelands, drawing in increasingly large hosts until at last King Jalzara I led his troops out of Dragonstone on the long sail to Incaland, and the floating fortress of Ollantaytambo.
The Sapa Inca meanwhile called upon the hosts of Mesa Verde, Whitehall, and Cuzco for the military mit'a, whilst recruiting additional troops atthe eleventh hour. However, particularly critical in the battle approaching upon the horizon, was the hiring of the experienced, even legendary, warrior benz282, a veteran of wars dating back to the very beginnings of the official maps. After a considerable wait as Jalzara consolidated his forces and made the long march to the Andes, their hostat last arrived, and began attempting an ascent along the east side of the terraced fortress: one that was easily repulsed through lava drops. The citadel would not be taken so easily.
Their initial attempted storm by ladders thrown back, the Stormlands army settled in for a longer siege as they began constructing a siege tower. Meanwhile, the leader of Shinra, an otherwise uncommitted corporation, held the bridge leading into the fortress in a vice grip while on horseback, preventing the flow of additional reinforcements into Ollantaytambo and slaying numerous would-be observers. Whilst Jalzara's army busied themselves with the tower, a pair of brave Incan warriors dropped from the sickening heights into a small pool below, before flanking and dispatching Ditronian, ending the blockade and leaving the Stormland Army vulnerable in the fields of the Urubamba Valley.
With Ditronian slain, the way lay open for a sally into the open field: the risks were great, but the potential for a stunning victory greater. Having rallied together his forces, the Sapa Inca led the charge alongside Benz towards the Stormlanders, who were divided as they ferried forward replacements for a pair of soldiers killed by Inca marksmanship. The siege tower was cleared first, as a lone and unfortunate Stormlander was stranded from the rest of the army. The rest, streaming forward from their occupation of the Inca capital, were put to a rout by the determined resistance and subsequent counterattack by the Inca army. The fleeing troops were all run down, including the King, Jalzara, who after losing some 7 troops with only two kills to their name, sued for terms and surrendered.
The events of the coming day, however, would prove the war would be far from over...
PEACE AT LAST: TREATY SIGNED AFTER DRAMATIC ESCALATION
-Troops on all sides celebrate the signing of the peace treaty in the early morning of August 15th, 2015
Despite the victory at the Battle of Ollantaytambo, a formal end to the conflict was delayed as King Jalzara requested a guarantee of sovereignty from Raven before putting down his signature. This delaying tactic, and a furious campaign of diplomacy, meant by the following day the tides that once were fully in favor of the Raven-Inca alliance had turned against them. Shinra, who had participated in the battle the previous night, and Ithlum, with their experienced corps of veteran troops, had joined the Stormlands in their war against the southern nations. Having secured the agreement of Raven's leaders for a guaranteeof Stormland's sovereignty, the Sapa Inca met with the King and asked for a closure of the war. He would be sorely disappointed.
Stranded atop Ollantaytambo, as once before, an army of Stormlanders, Shinra employees, and later reinforced by Ithlum mercenaries, surged up the causeways ringing the citadel. Despite deploying lava as a delaying tactic, without his troops at hand, the situation was dire. At last, crack troops from Shinra nether pearled atop the upper tier: alone, the Emperor stood his ground, slaying one before himself succumbing, and being held prisoner in the fortress barracks. The rest of the allied army ascended to the upper tier and sacked the armories, leaving little of value, before going on a series of patrol in search of Father Headcrusher, former leader of Raven.
However, the Sapa Inca was not without hope. A detachment of mercenaries, who volunteered on the dangerous mission, left Karamagne to liberate the Inca Emperor from his captors. When they arrived, the occupying garrison was out on patrol, and giving Tiberius a set of armor they fled the fortress: one, however, was caught by returning troops from Shinra as they made their escape. Once out of reach from the alliance led by Stormlands, they traveled to the safezone to reequip andregroup.
The alliance was not far behind, however, and once discovered by Ditronian, the army composed of Tiberius, Mayonessa, RabidCareBear, Guyava, and Headcrusher took to the surrounding hills to await their advance. After several probing scouting missions from the Inca-Raven Army, the allied forces at last advanced into the forest to meet them, being of roughly equal strength. Despite the experienced veterans amongst the allied army, the dense forest and the cohesion of the main body of the Inca-Raven army smashed through and targeted the Stormlandercontingent, as part of a strategy to break the weakened Stormlands and end the war. Jalzara, Doctor Munkey, and Ditronian were all slain, at the cost of the lives of Headcrusher and Guyava, who was separated from the main group and overwhelmed.
However, victory soon turned sour, as the Shinra corporation declared war on the volunteers' homeland of Karamagne in vengeance for their assistance in the campaign. With an ultimatum presented, the Karamagne troops filtered one by one back home, leaving the Sapa Inca alone and in despair. But a miraculous upset for the Inca and Raven and a disastroussurprise for the Stormlands at last turned the tide. The only survivors from the Safezone battle, from Ithlum, were mercenaries at the end of the day and when courted by offers from Raven, as well as compensation of the ceremonial sword of the Stormlands seized by the Inca Emperor, decided to turn on their former ally. Rallied once again outside the safezone, and confident as the Inca forces melted away, their self-assurance turned to horror as the warriors of Ithlum turned their swords upon them. After such a dramatic escalation, all parties proud but battered, at last settled for white peace, with the war ending in no clear victor.
And so, the first major war of the map's history has ended at last.
This server brings back memories when I joined in map two, thanks to Guy, but with a whole new taste due to the maps size, upgrades to the spawn zone along with loyalty points, and some of the new factions that have formed.
