This realms program will of course make it a lot easier to join and host servers. Though I'm a little worried.
Dear realms team, I am requesting that you guys don't give it any bukkit capabilities. If that happens, no one will be using the real servers anymore. They will all slowly close down as no new players search for servers while it's just easier to use the realms service. I think no matter what that this will be the closing of smaller servers. I'm not worried about major ones such as Project Ares. It's just that players will want to use the official minecraft hosting service than join a different server unofficially hosted. Know what I am saying guys?
I wouldn't worry about that. Established servers, or servers wanting to be larger than a group of friends, probably won't change much.
Realms is incredibly awesome for anyone who wants to play with a small group of friends, family, host a private event on short notice, and a lot of other things! Still, I can't imagine how this adversely effects any servers.
They will continue with the normal public servers, Mojang already mentioned, they have no intention to eliminate such servers. To enter a Realm server has to pay, remember that

I agree. I didn't think of it that way I guess. I forgot the little detail that you have to "invite" players.
Why would anyone need real servers when you have a quick and easy way to play with your friends for some cash? Realms instead of real servers are a lot better! People just pay da money, and get a server with bunch of mods/plugins (minecraft API, right?) they want, capable of holding up to <amount of money paid>/100 people! You just open realms menu, find server you like, and press join! Real servers will still be used by people, who want to play with their friends without paying money, but it is hard to open a port on router for some people..... So yeah, people who are too dumb, too lazy, or just don't have fast enough computer or quick enough internet connection will pay for realms server, that's all!
And everyone's favourite Project Ares will be avaliable for all people to join through the realms menu, in "PVP and game maps" tab or something.
See? It's not a problem! It's the future! And if you are scared of changes, you can play minesweeper on windows 2000, it never changes

Just to clarify, to host a Minecraft Realms server, you need a subscription, but for someone else to play on it, it's free. It's just smaller scale, vanilla server hosting, built into the game. Whatever it is now, and whatever it may evolve into, it won't be doom and gloom like some predict. Traditional servers will always play a major role in the multiplayer community, and this will bring more players into the multiplayer world by letting them, their families and friends play together with a few button clicks.
this sounds like its going to be amazing. I see this becoming a major help for soldiers who already use minecraft to try and stay connected with there children. If I could id buy everyone at mojang a beer

Thank you for this, I have already talked to our Guy in the company who handles our family server's If we can handle this.

Best resourceful, long-distance, interesting yet obsolete, Upside-down, inside-out, alternate use for Minecraft EVER!!!
As SGT Giroux has stated we have used Minecraft servers in the past to keep family's in touch with great success. It seems the being able to play with there children even when there thousands of miles away has been more effective for morale with the soldiers and the family's than anything else we have tried. As far as obsolete I can assure its not, We are currently gearing up for another deployment and will be implementing Minecraft servers for morale for the third time. If this minecraft Realms is operational before deployment I will have our Tech boy implement it for us
I really don't think that Realms is going to eat up multiplayer for desert. Realms will only allow 10 - 15 players where servers today are capable of hold 500 people at once.
I think Minecraft Realms is a great idea, both for Mojang, and for users. It will be easier than ever for users to connect with friends on servers. I don't think I will be able to afford hosting one; however It seems like a great way to introduce more personal, friend/family servers.
You will need to pay App Store money to host a realm for either a year or a month. Also depending how many people, cam get on the server. This year will be a beta version, of minecraft pocket edition red stone in 0.8.0 yay!
As a server host I hope minecraft realms stays to smaller vanilla servers as some of the Mojang staff have mentioned. I was assuming minecraft realms was going to move into larger scale servers with plugins/mods but after reading these posts it sounds like they are staying out of that game for now. I'm still interested to see how minecraft realms will expand after the release.

My life is complete with this achievement.

Anyways, how do we get into the alpha anyways?
You can be invited by current testers or have been lucky enough to have started as a tester
I don't need this thread anymore. Sacheverell solved the whole thing for me. But I guess you guys can post your opinion if you like.
It would be nice if I could get invited.
If I don't it's fine. Can't wait

Thank you SGT Giroux for pointing this out for me
