Minecraft Realms will be released to the public very soon. I was wondering what the community thought of it and if and how you plan to use it. Is it a good idea or will it fall flat?
It's a small, whitelisted server system for people who don't want to invest in a major server. It's a service that lets you pay a small price for a server that can hold I think 10 people(?)
Server hosting companies will probably be mad with Minecraft Realms.
I would think not, although I see your point. You see, Minecraft realms is a very small server for like a group of friends or something. Not really the large-scale thing that server hosts do.
For small community servers like mine, I'll probably use it for custom maps or events. Skyblock, CTM maps, Adventure maps, and hardcore survival worlds all sound like things I might use the Realms service for. If it's really costly, I'll probably just not use it. But if it's cheaper than running my own server without compromising it's performance, I can definitely see myself using it.
I'll probably get one for me and a few of my good friends who I can't play LAN with anymore. That is, if it's not that pricey.

People should marry for love, not convenience. And if Uther thinks an unhappy king makes for a stronger kingdom, then he's wrong because you may be destined to rule Camelot but you have a choice... as to how you do it. ~Merlin
I won't be using them.
I generaly only play MC with my friends and we set up out own server on a spare PC months ago. Took about 15min (only vanilla) and its been running like a baws ever since. Essentially just boot up an Ubuntu server, grab a script or two, pico it to your liking, throw up some cron jobs and you're golden. Port forward where applicable
I certainly don't fault anyone who decides to use them.
Realms is perfect for me. I've created dozens of servers over the years for my friends and I to play on, but they end up getting scrapped due to lack of hosting and loss of interest. Having a cheap, always on server for my group of friends to hangout in every once in a while removes a lot of the hassle of getting everyone to play together. I just hope the monthly fee is negligible enough that I don't mind paying for it while my friends and I are interested in other games.
I am surprised nobody mentioned that the money will be going -directly- to Mojang, the people that brought us this fun and awesome game. For me, that's enough to have a small server (cuz I usually only have a few friends I trust to build with anyways). I do not mind supporting Mojang at all in their attempts to bring people closer together for those that aren't technologically skilled (or knowledgeable) about making their own servers. Sure, they get profit for it compared to something 'free', but the more money they get, the more they'll update. Or at least that's how I see it.
I will be using my MC Realm for those few friends online that I love building with, going on adventures, and otherwise just goofing around. A lot of us are roleplayers and love using the server to that capability. Building towns with in depth stories and mysteries, castles, exploring caves, and mapping out the world around us. I think we'll love a constant realm that is online, set up so that when one of us builds something extraordinary, another one of us can find it in our explorations. I'm very very excited!
It depends on if MC Realms will have mod support or not. If it does, I will likely be hosting a lets play series with a bunch of friends I've played D&D with in the past. And we will be playing on survival for one day a week, while the rest of the week will be spent in creative, constructing mini adventure maps for everyone.
I dunno, random idea I guess. I definitely do want a place to play with a few of my friends though.

why didn't you just make your own server all this time...
