I recently started a dedicated server on a private owned server computer I run for friends. As of currently, only me and one other person knows about this server and it's in address. Last night I left the server at 2am and got back on today at 130pm. When I joined I found that all of my boxes were destroyed and the contents scattered. The ground was broken around all of them as if they had blown up by tnt. Every door and gate was open except two gates in my sheep Farm. I was thinking it could have been a glitch of some kind, except all of my red stone, gold and iron was missing (the only things missing) and in the place of the box they were in were two red stone torches. Does anybody know of any glitches or anything that might cause this? Or did someone just happen across my server some how and grief me? I can rule out the possibility of the other person who knows of the server as its my mother and she wouldn't even know where to start to do this.
If this is vanilla I would recommend whitelisting it... this could not have been a glitch (1 in a million chance). There are clients that find vanilla servers to grief, so somebody probably found your server that way and griefed it.
Hmmm just use spigot and download worldgurd and worldedit to protect the world. Or essentials and essentials antibuild. WorldGuard requires worldedit and essentials antibuild requires essentials. Also using spigot reduces lag by 110% and adds in a million fun features. Also you can get core protect so you can undo a grief. If you want you can upload your server to MediaFire and I can set it up for you.

If you want a spigot server with the version on 1.11 and essentials, essentials antibuild, and pex (PeX must be used to allow you to build but other players not to be able to build:
I checked the server log and found that a player by the name of "ColdFuseon" had joined at around 1030 this morning. He was in the game for 5 minutes and the entire time he was there, the console was giving warnings such as "Player moved wrong" and "player moved too fast!". I white lsited the server until i can get it set up to be a little safer for public use. The only thing i cannot figure out is how he managed to get tnt and blow my boxes up the way he did in only 5 minutes as i didnt even have the resources needed to make tnt yet. Thanks everyone for the help!
Well you could, but it is a private server so there won't be a lot of people on there and it would make more sense to just add your friends. Also you will not stop any future server hopping griefers with a blacklist.

All the "player moved wrong" messages show he was probably using a hacked client. Also if you are not a creative server ForceOP does exist.

Leave a thanks if I helped you!
You can see who joined your server on the console if not you can see who visited your server in the usercache file. (open it with notepad)
Also make a whitelist like deitnerb said.
Hmmmm I was thinking a blacklist

Oh thats easy! He used a hacked client like the "Wurst" you can op yourself no matter what in any vanilla server!

lol, Wurst doesn't guarantee op on any vanilla server. It can try to brute force authme passwords, that's it.
I know back in 1.8 all you had to do to op yourself was click a sign, I'm sure it still exists today in one form or another.
Yes thats what I was thinking bc I just did this the other day. Lol
