If you have direct access to the server folder, than do the above. If the host has it, simply ask them to open the server.properties file and change the max players setting.

He is using multicraft, so he can go into the FTP, or straight on the homepage.... there is a spot in the server.properties, or in multicraft theres a textbox on the homepage of it you can add more to, it is called "slots".
Here's a question, how on earth do I REDUCE the cap? I'm only trying to run a small server, but I need at least 3GB because it's running a modpack. I don't want it to be a cap of 36!
Unfortunately, I encounter the same problem when trying to lower the cap; it does nothing, and every time I restart the server it just resets back to 36.

Depending on the provider they may have "capped" of the limit or would just have to ask them to increase it to xyz.
