Stressed dad here trying to be able to get a LAN game going for my kids.
Computers are running win7 and win8, firewall / security set to allow the game to run
Minecraft v 1.8.4
Minecraft server v 1.8.6
wireless LAN, port forwarding configured
Single Mojang account
I have followed all the guides and tutorials, I appear to have succeeded today in getting a server to run that can be connected externally, but still fail to be able to connect over the LAN.
We really only want an internal game running over the LAN, not over the internet - yet. So am I right in believing that the server does not need to be launched, that all we need to do is start a game, then open to LAN, then get the other computers on the network to join that game under the multiplayer tab?
That is what we are trying to do, but keep getting an error that the java connection has timed out.
Also, when you share a game to LAN, it gives a new port number every time. This is not covered in any of the dozen tutorials I have read, as in every one it deals with the default port of 25565
The only thing we can think of as to why it will not connect, is that we have a single account and that we may need to each have our own account to log in with, which as far as I can tell, means buying a fresh copy of the game for each computer.
Any help would be appreciated, we have been reading and watching tutorials for a month and just cant get it to run.
So you are trying to do LAN with 2 players that are logged in to the same account? Sorry, but you cannot do that. Each kid will need their own account to play together.
No joy unfortunately, just bought a second copy, new log in details, different email address - everything, but it will still not connect to the game opened to LAN. It can see it, but the connection keeps timing out before connecting.
I'm not too good with networks, sorry. If your computers think that your internet is a "coffee shop" network it will block communication with other computers I think, but considering these are YOUR computers your network is probably already set to a home network. I think I vaguely remember having this problem to, and I think I resolved by allowing Minecraft to use your internet in a certain way, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure. Sorry if I'm not that much of a help, but I hope it all works out for you.

This is killing me :/
If you are able to see the connection but not able to join due to time out, I would suggest turning OFF the firewall on both computers and retrying. If that doesn't work then you are having an issue that I can't help with, hope this works for you
Ok I am not sure why it worked this time, but I disabled the firewall again as you suggested and it has connected for the first time ever. This is not the first time I have disabled the firewall to try and get them to connect, but this is the first time it has connected.
Thanks very much for your help guys, I really appreciate it.

Haha you know I thought it would be as simple as that.
I'll shell out some more hard earned shortly and let you know how I went.
