i set up my own small server on my laptop. I just finished editing some herochat config and had restarted the server, when i got the error msg, java.net.SocketException: host is down, even though i could clearly see the server was running. so i tried a few things and that didn't work. luckily barely anything was on it, so i deleted it and downloaded a new one, but still had the same problem. I can still go on the main multiplayer server i play on without any problems. any advice?

There's your problem... Mac sucks and PC is better for gaming anyway... Good Luck...
Seriously though It seems there is an issue with the host computer. Check if your IP address is still the same on your host computer. Also, do you play and host from the same computer?

Anyway i have the same problem as him. I have port fowarded my bukkit minecraft server (I am on a mac) My friends tried to get on and one of them had the error message java.net.SocketException: host is down but i was on hosting from the same computer with the correct ip address and it worked fine. My other friend tried to get on and the connecting kept running until it said timeout connection lost. Do you know what is wrong?
Firstly, MAC IS EPIC HOW DARE YOU BLASPHEME.Secondly, download port map (link at the end - not mine btw) check that ip, make sure it's the same as the one in your server.properties and then if that doesn't work, check if 'online-mode' is set as 'online-mode=false' and if it is, change it to true.http://www.codingmonkeys.de/portmap/
Is it the large one? When I use that as the ip and portfoward it with that it says

That is not a Valid Port
Go into server.properties
Find the server-port=
Change it to server-port=25565
Make sure the server-ip=
is left blankMake sure you forward port 25565
Mac is good for working on. But gaming... Windows is the way to go... Hosting too. Windows.
Also. it is not very good to host and play on the same computer. Well, fill out this form and I'll tell you if it is a good to host and play on the same computer.

Hi I figured it out. give him your ip in general and portfoward it using your regular ip
Thanks so much everyone for helping! i found my problem and it might help someone else.
in server.properties i changed the ip address to my wifi ip address and i changed online mode to true. then i tried connecting again and it said "no route to host" so i checked the ip i was using to connect to my server on minecraft and it was wrong so i changed it to the right one.

mac does not suck. 90% of windows computers lag like hell 24/7.
