I'd like to hear from some people who are running 50-100 player servers successfully (and have actually had that many people online without lag).
Here's my issue. The minecraft server hardware is generally single-threaded (it is multithreaded, but 1 thread does 99% of the work), so it cannot take advantage of duals, quads, etc.
I run a 20-slot server on an X2 @ 2.7ghz, and that is pretty much the max I can do with this processor. We still get a little bit of lag here and there, depending on what other people on the server are doing, and I can see the processor hitting its limit on one core (> 50%) in the resource monitor.
With this knowledge, what are people using to host 100 player servers successfully? Do you limit the map size, or use other tricks to help reduce server processor load? Do you just have a crazy fast i7 running @ 5.0ghz under phase cooling? What is the secret?
