Hi, I'm trying to run a server but I'm having an issue with fire and creepers.
My main concern is that whenever minecraft updates Hey0 breaks...not to mention Hey0 is ceasing development in lieu of Bukkit, which isn't even out quite yet. I'd rather not be beholden to either of these things since my server is just a basic minecraft game.
But I have some problems...
The first problem is that fire burns endlessly. I'd like to just turn fire off altogether. Is there a way to do this without using hey0 or plugins?
The second problem is that while no player or admin can actually mine or build on the 25 block radius of the spawn point....for some weird ass reason Creepers can still blow it up. So after running my server for a few days there's this GIANT crater in the spawn point where people are getting stuck in.
Is there a way to fix these problems with the basic game?
I don't think there's a solution yet, other than scripting or modifying the game itself...
I do hope that Notch modifies his minecraft-server software so we can run it, check some options, and then click on a "start server" button.
The whole thing runs on a command prompt format so unless you have some scripts, you can't exactly modify the server from the get go.
For me, I want to know if it's possible to force the map generation to be smaller, as in, a non-infinite world.
Sure players want their "friggin huge world", but private servers are there for more than just surviving...
I know that map generator programs or templates of sorts can be used, but I think those stuff can be old and most likely not going to work.
I liked the indev settings where you can "choose" a type of generation, and I hope he puts that back into the game as a option.
My problem is that I tried to run my own server but I soon realized that MineCraft can be a resource hog and I didn't want to tie up my main system 24/7 with it running.
Also, I don't particularly like my home ip being given out to the world. Probably nothing will come of it...but still.
Worst of all, while my internet is pretty quick, it does have a 125gb cap. Sure, that should be enough to cover minecraft hosting for quite a few people, but it's not the only thing I do.
It made sense for me to pay for a host. I chose servercraft.co, although not for any particular reason. I find their service is good. It lags sometimes but that might just be the game itself. Their customer service is very good.
The only issue I'm having is that, and rightly so, I don't have full access to my minecraft files. Of course if they let people upload files to an executable directory that would leave them open to attack but still...with a game that has so many mods and plugins, it's hard to do much without it.
Worst of all, they let you backup the game but the backups are in an .mcb format and I'm not entirely sure how to get my hosted map running on my home computer now. So, if I wanted to try other hosting companies I would have to restart my world. Ouch.
So I really hope he starts giving servers some more control over how their world works. Maybe he should hire the Bukkit guys and fund/oversee their development a little more professionally...
Then MineCraft can not only be about lego-sandbox goodness, but also creative plugin makers. The possibilities are endless...and it's clear that SMP is the way to go and the demand for better plugins and better netcode, etc is there.
Most places I looked at want at least $40 a month for a 30 man server...and who knows how they'll perform!
I can recommend Sleekservers.com, they just started hosting Minecraft servers, they have been very helpful, and open to suggestions, so far, they are cheap and it seems to be running exellent with 10 players at the moment!

It's hosted on a fast server and there's no whitelist. At least check it out!
