well, I was bored, so I came up with this idea. There would be 4 servers: 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D. Each one will have that amount of dimensions. Here's how it'll work:
1D - the map size is 1x1xS
2D - the map size is 1xSxS
3D - a normal server
4D - a set of probably 10 different maps, of normal size, which you could go through using chat commands (for example, "+4D" or "-4D"). If you saved your position and press R, you will be brought back to the dimension in which you saved your position. And in case I wasn't clear, when you use +4D and -4D, you will spawn in the same spot on the map as when you said it.
Now, this is and will probably stay as only an idea. I don't expect anyone to make it, I don't expect anyone to code it to be possible (4D thing is tricky, didn't one server do something similar though?).
Just a 'simple' idea :tongue.gif:
Whaddayathink?
Edit: Whoops, I forgot to mention. S means 'anything'.
no, 1D is a LINE, so it's one unit x one unit x anything.
2D is a SURFACE, so it's one unit x anything x anything.
3D is an OBJECT, so it's anything x anything x anything.
4D is... undefined, yet. But it can be described this way:
2D is an infinite amount of 1D. 3D has an infinite amount of 2D. Therefore, 4D has an infinite amount of 3D.
Now, because Minecraft is limited to 1m x 1m x 1m cubes, I am going to consider those cubes as the smallest unit possible. Therefore, 1D must be 1m x 1m x anything. 2D must be 1m x anything x anything. 3D must be anything x anything x anything. 4D is anything x anything x anything x anything.
Notice that in order to create each dimension, I am actually using one unit of the dimension that follows it. For example, 1D is actually 2D except with only one block to move right/left (you can only move up/down). 2D is 3D except one 'wall', you can't move forwards or backwards - just right, left, up and down.
3D is 4D except you can't move in that unpointable direction. In my idea, you go in that direction by using +4D and -4D.
GET IT? :tongue.gif:
Edit: Whoops, I think I explained it badly. Oh well.
Noclip theoretically can be viewed as 4D as you can pass through objects because if I remember being a 4D being you become a constant always being and never ending (I'm probably wrong). . . (that 4D thing is already on alot of custom servers)
Does no one care about the practicality of these maps? Minecraft is a 3d game, it uses 3d maps. Playing in a server that is 1*1*64 or something would be the most boring experiece of my life. A minecraft map that is only a vertically flat map is also extremely boring, drop the 1D and the 2D, and you have a good idea.
Yeah, the 1D and the 2D are just to have the whole thing :tongue.gif:
Time is NOT the fourth dimension. That's like saying the 3rd dimension is the 2nd dimension's time. It just doesn't work that way.
And for god sakes, trying to show 4D on a 2D screen is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. You can try to visualise 3D objects on a 2D screen, but it's still 2D. You're only convinced it's 3D because you're used to seeing 3D, you understand what it's supposed to mean. 4D is IMPOSSIBLE to visualise on a 2D screen. That's like... like visualising 3D on a 1D line!! IMPOSSIBLE!!
Well, anyway, the whole point of this is the 4D. 1D and 2D are just there for the 'full picture', and 3D is just a normal Minecraft server. However I'd like to see what creative things people can do with a 2D map, as in one single layer of motion. It actually has a lot of potential and is oh so simple to make.
what the 4th dimension is all depends on the situation, if you are talking physics, you probably are talking about time
on the other hand, in a space wise situation, its probably, *just, a new dimension to go around in
Okay, NeatNit: I understand what you mean and I think its awesome!
Everyone:
This isn't about debating 1D and 2D or even 4D... It about a multi-"layer" server
How to explain this:
Say you are walking around on this server, just hanging around, building stuff.
All of a sudden you find that the world is way to crowded. Now, instead of changing server or removing stuff, you would just type "+4D" to move to the next "plane"
The next plane, or world, would have started out as an exact copy of the main world. But since less people have been here, it wouldn't be as crowded.
So basically you would start out with 10, or so, flatgrass maps, and have people go around changing from world to world building wherever they find good. So the map would be 10 times a big.
Also you could probably use Q and E to change worlds/planes/dimensions, to ease things up

Isn't 4D the passage of time? I still like this idea, but with the new feature of bumping people off of platforms, wouldn't there be trouble in 1D?
No, see, in a 1D world, the boundaries would actually be... 1D. So unless someone uses noclip, they would all be shuffling around in the box. IMHO this makes for an awesome chatroom.
1D = 1 1x1x? line
2D= 1 1x?x? platform
3D= 1 ?x?x? map
4D= 1 ?x?x? universe off maps(in minecraft only) - This would be the TIME definition in RL with 3D.
So, we could combine 1D,2D,3D and 4D into 1 big server.
You cant have a world which is both 1D and 2D. I wont even bother to explain to you that 3D is a combination of 1D and 2D, in a way. Of course, we could have a server with different maps, which I am totally for.
Oh, and for the time thing: It has been suggested by Zuriki, if I remember correctly. It is an awesome idea, but untill we get that, I would like to be able to have several maps on a server, without having to pay for it. Stuff like this should be standard.
Look, it's not hard.
1D - this has just about 0 potential. It is a simple line. Goes from the bottom to the top of the map, but the map size is 1x1. You can go up or down, but not forwards, backwards, rightwards, leftwards, or in the two extra 4D directions (which from now on I will refer to as bogwards and fenwards, which I just made up).
2D - Has less potential than 3D (normal Minecraft) but can still turn out to have some very cool results. You can go from the bottom to the top of the map, and from the left to the right of the map, but you can't go forwards, backwards, bogwards of fen-wards.
3D - Normal Minecraft. You've seen its potential. You can go from the bottom of the map to the top, you can go from the right to the left, you can go from the back to the front, but you can't go bogwards or fenwards.
4D - Actually, just a set of, I dunno, about 5 3D worlds. They should start either exactly the same or with a small variation between them. In theory has a lot of potential, however due to impossibility of showing it in 4D, its potential is only slightly higher than 3D.

1D is a dot, so technically it would be 1^3 or just 0^3
2D is flat so it would be 0x?x?
So none of these are valid.
2D is a SURFACE, so it's one unit x anything x anything.
3D is an OBJECT, so it's anything x anything x anything.

One dimension of travel = line.
0D would be your dot.
