I'm making this texture pack with a few parameters to follow, and it will be largely community driven, hopefully.
Here are my basic "Parameters" or standards that I would like my pack to conform too.
-All textures will be made from scratch.
No modification of current textures, with each texture I will delete the entire area and start clean. Most of my experience with photo editing of any kind has been just that, editing, not a lot of creation, so this is stretching myself slightly, but I think the final product will be better because of it.
-I will for the most part keep a similar color scheme to the default texture pack.
I don't want to change the landscape so much that people in SMP will be seeing much different structures than their peers. I will get very creative with special blocks, however.
-Patterns.
As you will probably notice from the WIP pictures, I like patterns in my textures. Sometimes obvious, sometimes not. They make everything feel nicer. The amount of patterning will be largely up to the community in most cases.
-Noise, or lack thereof.
I like a moderate amount of noise in my textures to keep everything from feeling so static. But the amount of noise is also something that the community will be influencing in large part.
-One block at a time.
I will be literally working on perfecting one or possibly two textures at a time. This will allow (I hope) for better quality textures though it will probably slow down the process.
-Community.
I want this texture pack in large part to be what YOU want it to be. If the community is involved, we can all craft something special. Criticism is more important to me than compliments. But compliments are nice too. ^.^
Glass. Strange perhaps and not as original as I would like it.
Cobblestone, I really like this one. But I may have made it a little too noisy. Here you can see how I like patterns. Edit: Lowered noise slightly by taking filling out discolored pixels. The effect is small but it looks better now.
And mossy cobblestone.
Grass. Maybe not everyone will like this. I'm considering lowering the contrast (Edit: Lowered, updated screenshot.) so the effect isn't so obvious and maybe adding a bit more noise. (Picture outdated, grass darkened a bit to fit the grass color palette better, pattern the same though.)
Dirt and grass side. I'm liking how this turned out. A little weird maybe. (Outdated, texture the same but in 1.5 grass sides conform to the color palette just like grass.)
Torches, as well as the HP/Armor meters.
My amazing GUI.
A puppy for because.

Version History
Moonrise 0.23: Added brick, rice, tilled dirt, watered tilled dirt, leaves, clay, custom fire, new breaking animation, redstone wire, sandstone, trees, and lapis ore. And planks, and stone half-blocks, and explosives, and I also changed glass. Whew.
Moonrise 0.17: Added Zombies, bedrock, Obsidian, changed water, snow, snowy dirt, dramatically changed stone, added all ores except Lapis Lazuli, and iron and wood doors.
Tibmine 0.12: Added an updated stone texture as well as flowers and a few small GUI changes, including health and armor meters.
Tibmine 0.07: Initial download release.
I'm personally a fan of patterned textures, i like your grass and cobblestone. as you said though the grass could do with a little less contrast between the light and dark areas.
As for your stone texture, it looks very flat, except for the darker spots which create a vertical polka-pillar pattern... as there's seems to be a gap in the texture where there are no specks.
Maybe you could try something involving a pattern of lines, grooves or scratches?
This seems promising, keep it up!
I like most of what you have here. The patterns look very good.
On stone. Possibly a diagonal jagged pattern? Or an even less contrasted stone version of the grass pattern. Right now, I think your stone texture is a little too much like an ore texture, though of course that needn't be true once you create your ore textures. Though you've said you don't want to modify any existing textures, I do believe that simply looking at what other texture creators are doing can be very inspiring. I don't know whether you've done any of that already, but I do recommend considering it if you have not.
I also think your water texture is a little off. Bubbles can work in a cartoony sense, but on Minecraft water they don't feel right. Maybe if the water was noisier to offset the cleanness of the bubbles.
Otherwise, I think you're doing good work and wish you luck with the other textures. I do think you shouldn't hope for too much community involvement, though. People are generally busy enough with their own work to become involved in another person's labors.
I will literally post screenshots of new/updated blocks within hours or even minutes of my creating and testing them.
I will take all your advice into consideration, I will definitely test the monochrome grass texture on the stone to see how that looks. I don't want it to become a themed texture however, so I doubt I'll stick with it.
In my texture pack, I got lazy and used the same texture for dirt, sand, gravel, and clay. I may or may not change it, but a pack like yours should use different textures...
I suggest a wavy pattern for sand, while keeping the cartoony/pattern look.

Here are some early screens for you too look at and for you to critique.
Want to look at all of these images in a Imgur album?

And I added water. ^.^ Water is my favorite thing to make. What do you guys think of it?

Edit: Scrapped idea, removed to avoid confusion.
Also I added glass.
After that, GUI and maybe an early WIP download so you guys can try it out yourselves.
