first off, i don't know if its just me but i like the default textures but hate the font and gui resolutions, so i merged the gui and font textures into an animated resource pack.
so here is what i did and what you would do if you do this yourself:
step 1: make your way to the .minecraft file and open the folder within that named "resource packs" or "texture packs" (they are both the same as far as i know)
step 2: from the resource pack folder, open the .zip file for the resource pack you want to take elements from. from there make your way until you see folders named things such as font, gui, textures etc.
step 3: once you are there click the file of the ones there to further open the texture files (if you want all the textures from one of the folders just right click the folder and skip ahead in this tutorial) then find the texture files you want and copy them
step 4: make your way back to the main resource packs folder and then do the process again with the second pack you want to merge with, this time instead of going to fine a file you simply go until the end of step 2 and paste the folder into that area (or going into the folder if you didn't copy the hole thing). you will need to find the folder/texture that was originally there and remove that (it can cause problems at times)
step 5: once your done (you can do this with more than 2 resource packs if you like something from allot of different ones) close the file exploring window/finder (finder on mac) and open minecraft, load up the resource pack your favorite things are all merged into and then you are done
this was far from a professional tutorial on how to do this and may not be easy to understand, but i hope it's helpful to someone
