So, I was wondering if 8x8 Resource Packs make Minecraft run faster. I have a really slow computer and was interested in getting one for 1.7.2. If you know please comment below. Also if you have a link to any 8x8 1.7.2 resource packs I would greatly appreciate it!
People have tested this and the answer is... maybe.
Without going into it too much, Minecraft always has to calculate the same number of pixels regardless of the textures used. That is, it has to calculate every pixel on your screen. Just running Minecraft in windowed mode (not full-screen) should logically have a more profound impact on performance than your textures.
What a lower-res pack does do is it takes some of the burden off of your computer's memory. From what I've gathered, it would be better to say that low-res packs are actually better for low-memory computers than just low-performance ones. (Though the two categories generally overlap.)
If you want to boost your performance, get Optifine and FPS++. Both of them make running Minecraft somewhat easier on a lower-end computer.
As for 8x packs, the three that I can think of off the top of my head are: BiTLY, Dot Sized, and Rainothy. I think there's also one more good one, but it escapes me at the moment.
I have a question... are you on a mac? Because if you are, this is natural for minecraft to run a little slow. I have the same problems, and it makes my computer steaming hot on the back. If you are, no I do not believe this will make minecraft faster, as Alvoria said earlier. I don't know much about windows, but if you are on mac this could be an issue.
EDIT: xD I was wondering why Alvoria's name sounded so familiar, then was browsing texture resource packs and realized that i had downloaded Alvoria's sanity texture resource pack. (how many times will it take for me to remember resource, I wonder?)
Here's the deal: Minecraft uses quite a deal of processing power, both with the CPU and the GPU. Texture packs are handed by the GPU.
Now consider the following: Loading an 8x8 texture is 1/4 of the load of loading a 16x16 texture (that is the default size). However (and here's the catch), despite the less work, you would only notice any difference if the GPU was bottlenecking the process. In other words, if you weren't running at top graphical performance, you may see some small difference.
The reasoning here is also valid for HD texture packs: the bigger the texture, the more load the GPU is subject to and your performance will drop accordingly.

Hope that helps.
And now that I've moved past that, I feel stupid for having forgotten it!
