Well, I've had some packs come and go for a few years now, and I just recently started releasing them. My cell shaded pack was my very first, released in early-mid 2011, then I moved from it. I have released several since then, but the first one I moved to after the cell shaded pack was what I currently call Redefined. Block Plus is a 128x128 pack I started in mid 2011, and I have been doing things slowly and carefully, and work has been off and on, but it is getting into a late stage of development. I think I should show what I have done and get some opinions on it.
I'm aware that most default edits are frowned on here, but such is why I haven't gone straight to releasing it. I can't say for sure now, but you guys may approve or disapprove, I am making this thread here to figure out which it will be.
Just a side note: All of these are hand-made. No filters have been used in the making of this pack. Every block is done pixel by pixel to perfection. I hope that accusation doesn't come up that I used one filter. For all of you that think this one thing can be done with a single filter, I encourage you to use that filter yourselves and show us your results. Unless there is some miracle feature I can't find, I doubt such results with proper tiling can come from a filter.
Ok, here are some screenshots of what is done so far. Some blocks are subject to change, such as the sand and sandstone. I'm not happy with the sand and the sandstone was an experiment that isn't at all like the original, so both will likely be redone.
To Do
- Enhance dirt texture, make it 'clumpy'
- Experiment with embedded ores
- Experiment with Stone Brick shading
- Work on a few more mobs
News
The Stone Brick is a block that has given me some trouble in style and strategy. I think I finally found a style that works! It's all hand-shaded, and the moss has a texture to solidify the idea of it being moss.

Looking for feedback. Or if I should release it at all...
I love the effect on that pumpkin!!!!
Though I am not a fan of these types of packs at all.
Well, glad to have your feedback, I'm seeing how many people would like the style and want me to release it and how many would tell me that is is overdone/effortless and such, so thanks for the feedback, it helps. I'm glad you like the pumpkin though.

You have put a lot of time in why shouldn't you release it, people like all different styles. It reminds me of a more rounded cartoony R3D craft and that's a popular pack!
Its not my choice of style, but I certainly appreciate and understand the effort in working on HD packs without using filters or software assists. I'll be happy to take a look at it in game if you want, least i can
do!
Its nice and bright, and the art style is consistent, something that so annoys me about some packs is some textures look like they don't belong or don't have consistent quality whether they are 16x or 256x.
The pumpkin is spectacular. I think it is quite nice. I don't normally use hd default style packs, but this looks pretty good. I don't really like the pebbles in the dirt, it just looks... wierd.

Yeah, I wasn't so sure about that either. I think it is because I didn't do anything with the dirt itself, so the rocks are 3D and stand out too much over the flat dirt. I think I might redo that texture, and add some depth to the dirt clumps, that way it will have more depth overall, and the pebbles won't stand out as much. I'm glad you like it though, that pumpkin seems popular.

Thanks.
Consistancy is one of the things I worked towards in this. In some blocks, the 3D effect seemed different, so I tried to give them all the similar effect.
If you wouldn't mind, then I might send a test over to you. I'd like to see some more opinions here before I decide wether to release it or not, but if you have time, then someone testing it would help, see what you think of it when it's used in-game. I'll need to remove some of the random, experimental nonsense in it first though. Some textures have weird things done to them, so I'll fix those up, then send them to you. But I don't have my good computer now, and I probably won't before tomorrow, so tomorrow after school (about 4:14 atlantic time), I'll prepare it and send it your way.
Just as long as you have time though, I don't want to take time unless you have some spare, because your pack is looking amazing, and I don't want to take any of the time you use for making that.

Not my kind of pack, but it's nice. Really like the pumpkin's effect, lots of depth. It just looks too. . .Fake? Like that creepy smile people give you when their trying to hide their urge to kill you.
The only thing I'm not a fan of is how with the highlights and shading everything looks to shiny and almost plastic looking.
Well, some of that would be a difficult thing to fix, because I imagine different people have different ideas of too light and not light enough. I'm still experimenting, though. It is a WIP, so shading is some things are still being worked with.
Taiine's got a point, a lot of this is too shiny.
When you said Cel Shaded, I honestly though this:
Dr. Kalashnikov is the only person I know who can pull off a Cel Shaded pack well
Your pack here is by no means bad, just a bit too plastic-y
As I said in my answer to Taiine, it is partially an opinion thing. Could you point out some things that are too shiny? Or What I could do to reduce its "plasticyness"?
That is good Cel shading. My Cel shaded pack was made when I just started making textures, so it was as simple as it can get while still managing to stay in the "Cel shaded" category, not that great.

Thanks. The pumpkin is one of those textures that looks good from some angles, but bad from others. I took that from a good angle for now, but I'm trying to get an understanding of bump-mapping so it can have that 3D look, but the effect will work from any angle. Right now, I can't even seem to install the GLSL engine for that.
But this pack isn't meant for hyper realism. It is supposed to use Minecraft's kind-a cartoony style and give it depth and contrast to add some life to the textures.
Thanks all for the feedback!

The only texture that has a plastic-y feel (to me) is the Melon. It's
that band of light you have coming in from the top left, makes
it look like it's bundled in Shrink Wrap

Oh, heh, that is one of the experimental textures. I have some weird things done to some of the textures, some random things where I may have started something and stopped, or I might have seen that what I was doing wasn't working out and I left it. I've just fixed that and removed the messed up things (like the melon, bed and the sandstone that isn't anything like the default), so I'll put up a fixed version of the terrain.png now soon, Imgur is slow and can't upload anything right now.
Ok, I just fixed the cobble, I missed one rock, and it didn't have edge shading.
In larger news, I've made the topgrass texture, and I need opinions. Too sharp? Something bad about it?
(Baring in mind, that each pixel was shaded by hand. It took me about two hours of solid work on it)
At first glance that grass looks pretty nice. I may have to play with it for a while to decide because it seems that it might get a little bit too high contrast on the eyes, but it seems pretty nice.

Yeah, I was about an hour into it, and looking at the progress, it looked cool and three-dimensional, but as I finished and tested it, I noticed it is quite sharp. I tried to make it seem wild, so they aren't all beveled. I took a base colour, and all colours lighter or the same as the base colour are beveled to come up from the block, and pixels darker than the base colour are recessed, the sading is reversed so they appear to be lower in the block. I'm not sure if that effect helped make it seem more wild, or gave it too much contrast, but I'm still working with it. After testing it, I noticed a tiling error North and West, so I'm not done with it just yet.
Please post on this thread if and when you release it because I'd love to download it.
The pumpkin looks really good (like most people have mentioned), but I also like the dirt texture with the pebbles as well as the reeds which look far more vibrant than the default pack.

Thank you!
I'll let everyone know with an announcement and link when/if (looking more like a "when") I release it. I still have things to do on it, and problems to iron out, so suffice to say it won't be out tomorrow, but it may be soon. And I'm glad you like those, The pumpkin is getting popular, so I hate to take a screenshot from any other angle. I'm hoping to get bump mapping support so I can get the same effect, but it will change to look right from all angles. And the pebbles in the dirt and reeds were some of the textures that I think were the most three-dimensional, so I'm glad you noticed.

I've always been a fan of Vanilla HD style packs, this one looks better than the others IMO well done. I also am not a fan of the pebbles in the dirt being so....distracting from the grass texture, I think you should continue I would definitely download if you decide to.

I've taken some screen shots usings shaders, it kind of reminds me of running around a Sonic the Hedgehog world!
Some parts do need work to fit with or look as good as the rest, but i'll post up my critque when i'm back from work with some new screens.
