The wither hearts are the ones that look kinda blacky-brown. There should be a full heart and half heart in that colour, and another set next to it in a slightly lighter colour, which is for the Wither hearts when they're flashing.
I am personally making them purple for my texture pack, partially because I feel like it and partially because the Wither will be an evil violet flying triclops beast.
I know all the hearts/hunger and other stuff is in icons.png but I can't see wither hearts there at all. Can someone post a reference image at all?
...But that's just my opinion.
