For the past two weeks, I've been slowly working on a texture pack. It's my first real attempt, and my plan is for a sleek, sci-fi texture pack that's intended for use in custom maps. I'm not sure how well the community here takes to packs like these though. But, if necessary, I can try to alter the pack for use in natural, seeded maps.
Anyway, I'm making this topic to:
1. Get feedback to better the pack
2. Log my progress
3. Stay driven to continue work and finish the pack
4. Share my creations with the community
I'm not too far at the moment. I've just done what you see below in the terrain.png. Of course, I'm making all of my textures from scratch (though I did realize that a slightly-edited version of the default bricks looked the best) and if I do have a texture that looks like it's been stolen, I guarantee that it's just an accident and I will be willing to change it if I need to.
So, without further babbling, here are a few pictures that will hopefully give you a little idea about my pack. None of the textures are final and I am not pleased with quite a few of them. Also, please ignore the log... I promise it isn't a final texture.
The brown blocks are boxes, just to be clear...
I plan to maintain an fairly active log of progress, and will provide a link for download as soon as I feel I have done enough textures make a download worthwhile. You will then be able to download it for your own experimentation and enjoyment! Stay tuned!
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! Don't hesitate to subscribe to this thread for instant notification of posts and updates!
I like it a lot! I'd recommend some more detail in the blocks as they seem a bit bland, but overall it's a great start and I'd be sad to see this die before it's released.

Thank you! I too would be ashamed to have this project die off, but that's what this topic is here for! What would you recommend for adding detail to the blocks? I 100% agree with you that some of them look quite boring, but I have yet to find a common detail that I can add and carry on throughout the matching blocks. Any thoughts are appreciated!
I say run with this pack as a full "normal" pack. There are not many sci-fi packs out there and this one is (so far) done rather well.
Thanks! Though, in that case I would have to get a fresh terrain.png and switch around the textures to make it look... normal. Last time I checked, smooth stone doesn't look like a wall panel.
I don't have a problem doing this, but it will be more time consuming due to the fact that I'm no good making "organic" textures such as stone and grass. All in good practice I'm assuming.
Either way, I'll consider all of this, but I'm now starting to think that I should make a creative texture pack, then rip out some of the textures and mix/match with some new ones for a "normal" pack. We'll see. Now I just need to figure out animated textures.... and grass...
In my opinion grass is the hardest texture to make. Since you are going with a smooth look it might be a good idea to...imply the grass blades rather than draw them. Maybe just draw a few large ones....
Not entirely sure to be honest. The grass has to fit the theme of your pack and of all the textures it is the most important to tile correctly.

Indeed it is. I'm picturing a grass similar to default grass, but of course upped to 32x and maybe I could smooth it out a little and lower the contrast. It may sound a little cheap, but I might take default grass, shrink it and copy it to fill the square, and edit it to my liking; just until I can create something all on my own. I want to keep it smoother, but I don't want to add to the population of boring two-tone grass textures.
Stay tuned. I'd love to run by some textures by you as I get them done and see what you think. You seem to have a keen eye.
Sorry for two straight posts, but I do have new information...
I've started a new terrain.png file in an attempt to create a "normal" texture pack. All -- or most -- natural blocks will be my version of what you'd expect, but craftable blocks will be the sci-fi blocks. I'm not entirely sold on this idea, so it might change.
I mostly want to ask about my smooth stone texture here:
Please give me criticism on it. I feel like it's very bland, simply ugly, and there's a pretty obvious feather-shaped tiling repeat. How could it be improved? Should it be darker? Another color? Or entirely revamped?
Ignore the grass texture below it, also. The color differential between the darker green and the other two is too great and it looks like an armada of dark green worms are poised to attack....

Thank you as well! If you have any suggestions as far as the further detailing of blocks go, please share!
I know... It's my pathetic attempt at a placeholder texture.
Thanks all! Keep the feedback coming and it'll help keep the creation going!
And as a little footnote, what do you guys think about the pack: custom map texture pack versus normal texture pack?
