I heard you archive the GUI but now i cant edit them and its really confusing me

What?

You can't edit the files while they're in the .zip, if that's what you mean.

no i mean i edit them but they dont show up on my texture packs

Hmmm... I don't know. What version of MC are you using? Have you ran the HD Patcher? 1.9 was giving me trouble with textures until I ran that, not with items though.

1.8.1 and its a 16x so im not sure about the mcpatcher?

Try putting the items.png file inside the gui folder inside the texture pack zip file.
