Redstone can be very difficult to understand, especially if you haven't messed around with it before. It takes lots of practice and even more patience to get your mechanisms to work properly. This post will give you some of the most basic facts and properties of redstone to help you get on your way to creating complex machines.
Basic Facts
There are several basic facts that every player must know about Redstone.
Redstone dust is mined from Redstone Ore.
An iron pickaxe (or better) must be used to mine the ore.
Each ore drops roughly 4-5 Redstone Dust.
It is most commonly found within 10 blocks of the Bedrock level.
Redstone can be placed on all blocks except Glass and Ice. It also cannot be placed on triggerable blocks (TNT, Chests, etc.)
Properties
Redstone can be placed on blocks adjacent to each other to create a line of redstone wiring. It can also be placed up or down one block (like a staircase) to move the signal up or down.

Redstone signals extend 15 blocks from their origin. The signal gets weaker the farther away the blocks are placed from the source of the signal.
*Image 4*
Redstone cannot be placed on the sides of blocks.
Redstone wire will connect to any wire placed on a block adjacent to it.

Powering
Redstone can be powered in several ways.
Button: Current will be on for 0.9 seconds before turning off (kind of like flicking a light switch on and off)
Lever: Once the lever is turned on, the current will stay powered until the lever is turned off again.
Pressure Plate (Stone): Redstone will stay activated as long as a player or mob is standing on the pressure plate. The current will subside when the player/mob steps off.
Pressure Plate (Wood):Works the same as the stone pressure plate, except it can also be activated by dropped items.
Redstone Torch: Provides a constant signal. There is no direct way to turn the signal off.
Redstone Block: Works the same as a torch, except in block form.

Placing a Redstone Torch on a block that is already redstone-powered will cause the torch to switch off.

Moving Redstone Signals Up or Down
There are several ways to shift a redstone signal up or down. The first way, also the most basic, is to create a staircase of redstone wire.
*Image 8* *Image 9*
However, there is a way to compact it. This is the spiral staircase.

Some other ways of doing it use redstone torches.

More Info
Every redstone machine has to have a constant (or semi-constant, depending on your machine) redstone signal in order to work properly.
Conclusion
I hope my guide was helpful for those of you just beginning your journey into the wonders (complications) of redstone. Obviously, this is only a very small chunk of what redstone can do and what it is, but this guide was intended for the very first level of beginners. I'd appreciate some feedback on this, and if there's any way I can improve this guide or any future guides, let me know please
You just can't post an imgur album on the forums (because that's a web page).
If you go to your imgur account when logged in, click on an image and it will provide you with a bunch of different codes you can use to post the images in forums. For the Minecraft forums, use the BBCode (second column, second row) -- which is the same as I showed you above, but maybe faster.
Some other comments:
You can place redstone dust on furnaces (sneak-right-click, etc.).
Except for the fact that they both provide power, redstone torches and blocks of redstone pretty much have no similarities -- where they can be placed, whether they can be moved or switched, directions they power, etc.

Thank you for the feedback. I originally uploaded each picture individually to Imgur, and tried what you suggested above, but when I went to post the topic I got this in return: "You can't post images with that extension on this board".

EDIT: also, stone buttons are 10 redstone ticks (1 second, not 0.9) and wooden button are 15 ticks (1.5 seconds).
