I'm trying to create a contraption that requires the same lever to turn one wire off while turning the other one on. Is there anything I can do to make this happen?

You could use an inverter,

Some people are really bad with redstone.. No offence.

I remember my first contraption... Simple reprogrammable combo lock. Took up around a 25 x 12 space. Now it's something like 12 x 8, and no glitches.
