I'd like to see what everyone thinks of the merge, which is of course, the largest part of the 1.3 updates. I've seen lots of hate for it, and lots of positives, and I'd just like to see the general consensus, as of current.
-For those who don't know what the merge is-
The merge initiated by mojang basically wipes out the SSP codebase, and the SMP codebase is used for both single and multiplayer. Multiplayer is the same, while single players is run with a "server" and a graphical client shell. On multicore or multithreaded computers, this actually increases performance because the load is spread between multiple threads.
Of course, there are some problems with SMP glitches that have transferred to singleplayer.
As a multiplayer person, these don't really bother me, but hey, I'd like to see what singleplayer people think.
I think it's a good thing (I've played more SSP, for the record). Most of the problems seem to have been ironed out too (at least I haven't had any significant bugs in a while). I think what some people don't get is that this is neccesary, because it will make the Mod API much easier and also speed up development from here on out since they won't have to implement things more than once.
Really, they probably should have done this a long time ago, would have made things that much easier for 'em in the long run.
Better performance for those with multi-core computers that are not sitting on the very edge of being able to run MC.
(Single core systems and those with minimal amounts of memory are going to have more issues.)
Faster bug fixes, automatic support for both SMP and SSP from mods, and the ability to share your SSP world on the LAN.
The biggest downside (If you aren't running this on an old laptop or something.) is the introduction of some SMP bugs, but with the faster bug fixing the merge will allow that's not a critical problem. (Provided you actually have some patience.)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

I agree with all of your upsides, however, the downside is still relevant to quite a lot of people, I, for example, run Minecraft on a laptop, I think that it is about 1 1/2 years old (with a Triple-core, so it runs Minecraft better then ever now) I am having some small issues with SMP type lag, but it isn't really a big deal, the only problem I am having a lot is the lighting issue, but again, that isn't really a big deal.
Note: I am all for the merge, mostly so that I don't have to port my mods to SMP and the fact that me a and my brothers and/or some of my friends can all play on one world via LAN which is the only way any of us can really play Minecraft multi-player (yes, my internet is really bad)
Personally, since I only play SMP, this is just great because it will mean more bugfixes for SMP, but I can see why some singleplayer peepz might be somewhat frustrated (although complaining and saying the updates sucks completely because of it is overreacting)

See, I have played almost entirely SSP, and I am annoyed at the lag and such, but I also see that there are a great deal of benefits to merging that will benefit minecraft as a whole. So I can deal with the problems it is causing
I play SSP.
Didn't make mine any slower, made it faster.
Since it is a snapshot, it's buggy, for example all of my signs go blank, and when I change back to 1.2.5 my signs have text again, but yeah.
I enjoy it.
I recently started playing SMP.
So many bugs! Man...
I can't wait for 1.3. I know those bugs have been crushed, thus it will be so much easier to do spleef, superjump, and normal survival.
