(I can't take screenshots of Minecraft so forgive bad quality camera).
EDIT: So that is a 'ruined nether portal' and a brand new structure added to both Overworld and Nether in 1.16 snapshot 16. Nice.
EDIT 2: Second portal. Both have a chest on one side with nether-y stuff in it, and this one has lava too. Interesting how it cuts off the tree when you'd expect it to be the other way around based on their age.
Abandoned/ruined portals are a new feature added to today's snapshot. I haven't seen one yet but judging from how that looks I assume that is the case here.

Yep, this is on the seed -1106935450745691990 * on the way to an outpost. There is a taiga version and a plains version.
I'm fairly sure bonus chests are more or less supposed to cut through anything to make sure it is easy to find.

They aren't supposed to be able to delete blocks though as there is no reason for them to - the game places the chest on top of the highest non-air block so it would only be unable to place it if the ground level was at y=256, and likewise the torches should only be placed in air blocks. Indeed, this is exactly how it worked in older versions (code is from 1.6.4):
// Checks for an air block and a solid top surface when placing chest
if (par1World.isAirBlock(var8, var9, var10) && par1World.doesBlockHaveSolidTopSurface(var8, var9 - 1, var10))
// Likewise, it does the same when placing each torch
if (par1World.isAirBlock(var8 - 1, var9, var10) && par1World.doesBlockHaveSolidTopSurface(var8 - 1, var9 - 1, var10))
{
par1World.setBlock(var8 - 1, var9, var10, Block.torchWood.blockID, 0, 2);
}
(based on the screenshot the check for a solid surface at least is still working since no torch was placed in midair to the left)
Either way, this should be reported as a bug - after all, a lack of and/or broken checks before placing blocks is exactly what causes bugs like being able to remove bedrock (its "unbreakable" property only applies to Survival mode players trying to mine it, otherwise it is just like any other block). A good example of a similar issue is MC-10176, caused by the branches of oak trees replacing any block in their way (instead of checking if it is air or leaves).

I hadn't even noticed the game updated, woo.
Ok, so I don't know, is this a glitch or not? Has it been reported? I don't think bonus chests are supposed to cut through trees like this.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
