Sooo I noticed they 'fixed' the gamma thing you could do to get rid of darkness and I was wondering, Why?
Like why would they do that? To create a necessity for torches (and other light sources)?
idk but I don't like it and I find it kinda hard to wanna play 1.15 (and further updates) now
so is there a way to circumvent this or am I just stuck with it?
Depending on your display settings the darkest areas on this image range from pure black to a uniform gray, with no details whatsoever (from my own self-modded 1.6.4 version):
This is my own code that makes sure that gamma is between 0 and 1, the same as what Mojang did in 1.15:
// Prevents user from editing options.txt to set gamma outside its valid range of 0-1
float f = this.minecraft.gameSettings.gammaSetting;
if (f < 0.0F || f > 1.0F)
{
System.out.println("Warning: gammaSetting was outside of its expected range (0-1); was " + f);
this.minecraft.gameSettings.gammaSetting = Math.max(0.0F, Math.min(1.0F, f));
}
There is an easy way to get around this, built into the game itself - Night Vision potions and commands (the former for Survival, latter for Creative if you don't want to have to keep using potions). Not only that, this is/was officially considered to be a bug (still "unresolved" but they may have just not edited it yet; the last comment says it still affects 1.15 and I don't see any mentions of related bugfixes in 1.15.1; perhaps you are trying to edit the file while the game is running):
I could see a good reason to add in a setting to set the minimum brightness in Creative though, but it shouldn't be allowed in Survival, and as mentioned above, custom maps and such can use commands (maybe even allow them to change gamma, or better, have an actual separate "brightness" setting, since "gamma" is supposed to alter the light curve between minimum and maximum brightness, where "Moody" has a rapid drop-off followed by a slower decline and "Bright" is more linear, and in either case there should be no changes to the minimum/maximum values, while an actual "brightness" setting would affect all light levels equally, just like changing the brightness of your display - complete darkness should still be completely dark though, since 0 times a number (e.g. 0.5-2 for 50-200% brightness) is always 0).
Also, there is a good reason to prevent you from editing settings past their intended bounds - countless crashes and reinstallations have been caused by either editing them or changing versions (many people reinstall the game to fix issues when all they had to do was delete a single file or run separate versions in their own directories). This is also why I've added "sanity checks" and use a separate file name for "options.txt" in my own mod (likewise, Optifine saves its settings in its own file to maintain compatibility with vanilla):
Possibly this person's issue as well, due to running 1.14.4 in the same directory as 1.15 (I know that Forge won't try to install itself in the wrong version), and so on.

Night vision is tricky for me because that removes the ocean fog effect (At least I think it does) and I just want caves to be bright enough so I don't have to spam torches every 10 blocks, I still use them when exploring new caves and ravines so I know where I'm been, but I don't have to put as many down, plus the servers I play on don't allow for me, some random loser, don't allow me to do /effect I know at least one lets me BUY access to a plugin command '/potion' but I paid for minecraft and that's good enough for me.
(Real quick edit: Idk how potion brewing works and night vision potions take golden carrots from what I've seen and golden carrots are my main food)
They did? I think that is a great thing - did they also make it so that a light level of 0 (no torches or sunlight) is actually dark?
Fraid not!
It's still perfectly feasible to cave without torches, even with the lighting set to Moody.
Digging stairs downward is a bit scary, I could just barely see the next step but when I reached a cave it really lit up like a moonlit night, not a full moon night but enough to clearly distinguish all the ores, except maybe coal, coal ore, stone and andesite are hardish to distinguish from each other but they are all perfectly visible and diorite shines as brightly as ever.

My monitor was set too bright, dialing it back a bit improved the readability of Google Maps as well.
But setting it low enough to make me lose my bearings in a "dark" cave, and only as long as there is no diorite around, made noon look like dusk.
One of the great things about Minecraft is that it can appeal to any age group. I am almost 70, and my eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be. I even bought a high-end gaming laptop, hoping that the best available graphics (Nvidia RTX 2080) would make it easier for me to see. Turns out that dim is still dim in RTX - the problem is my eyes. So I still have to edit the options.txt file to keep it bright. Please don't force me into creative because you want to keep the game pure by disallowing brightness in Survival. I love to build stuff, but I like the challenge of having to find the resources (and I even play in hard mode!) You can still have dim, but I need bright, or I can't play in any mode. There is no "One True Way."

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Just testing.
