This is something I've always wondered about. My guess is that it's something like this (slight NSFW), but then again I don't know if that's just a stereotype or if that's the reality. (also, who else loves The Oatmeal?)
In Portal 2, when you escape with Wheatley, the first thing he says is "Hey buddy! I'm speaking in an accent that is beyond her range of hearing!" The developer commentary describes this as him attempting (and doing a terrible job) of an American accent. I don't know the extent to how accurate it is being American myself, but here's a video of it:
edit: What I meant by accurate is how we would sound to other people.

Hm, sounds a bit like a weird Minnesota-Canadian accent hybrid thingy
The more nasal the accent, the more annoying it is. The American race is known for that type of accent. Many see the American accent as extremely annoying. The Spanish find it annoying overall, and constantly accuse the English and American that they "Speak behind their teeth".
The American...race?
Also, that Oatmeal comic is rather hilarious, but then again it's the Oatmeal. I also hear there's a specific Michigan accent as well, although I've never heard mention of it being special. It's odd to know you always speak with an accent somewhere.
They're kind of fun. Here in rural PA they're annoying as heck, though, because there are a ton of wanna-be rednecks who sort of affect a southern accent, when in reality they're middle-class kids with huge pickup trucks and an affinity for shooting things
Do people in other countries think that the US basically Texas? As in, all American have a southern accent and live on farms? I've met a few people who do..

There's Chicago, South, South-West, California, Boston, Minnesota, New York, etc accents. They're all incredibly different.
omg, I've been looking for that video forever! Yay!
But there's not just one "American" accent. One from Idaho will speak drastically differently than one from Texas or Wisconsin.

Everyone has an accent, even if it doesn't seem like it to the speaker.
I feel like I should comment on this because of the stereotyping. :|
I guess I'm Californian, though I don't use any surfer lingo (mostly).

I find Wisconsin accents intolerable, and I find most northeastern accents annoying.
My DeviantArt, so sexy
