Maybe it's because they have no reason to type coherently? If they want to get their message out as fast as possible, they won't care if the spelling is correct. They care if you get the message.
Preteens might have imperfect spelling and conventions because they don't have as many years of schooling under their belts as high school graduates. What perplexes me is when older teens and 20-somethings have poor spelling and conventions. There's no excuse for it.

I don't think I've ever been bad at grammar usage, even when I was nine. But anyway, I neither expect preteens to spell correctly nor feel the need to call them out on it. On the other hand, when my twenty-four year-old brother cannot spell words correctly, that's a problem.

Um... I'm going to be over there crying. That was painful.
I don't think it's preteens, TBH. I've been a contributing member of this community since August (counting my old account), when I was 12. I've had people suggest me for moderator of the Computers section, so be assured my posts have always been pretty good. My little sister sometimes comes on as well, she generally makes good posts but doesn't bother to spell/grammar check. She doesn't "1337" speak, so it's still legible.
The Facebook kids, as I call them, however, are horrible. They go out of their way to spell incorrectly. Suddenly, "Hey guys, what's up? I was just at the game." becomes "hay guis wuzzup i wuz jst @ teh gme lol". Embarrassing, to be honest. It doesn't benefit anyone, and would make you look like a general asshole if it weren't an actual trend that many kids 13-18 or so follow, thinking they're cool, and somehow gaining respect by posting like that.
But in all seriousness, I do type as correctly as possible. I did when I was 11-13. I am 13 now, and I still type as best as I can. I spell right the majority of the time.

"It's not nice to hate anybody, unless the person you hate is a complete idiot."
The gratuitous use of 1337 to try and be funny isn't really working. It's not even really English at that point. It's a sub-language. Hard to read, yes, but so far off the original language that grammar rules do not apply. (At least, that's what I think)

Middle-schoolers (and high-schoolers alike) tend to disgrace my eyes with that fetid husk they call "Dialect" due to their trying to meld with the rest of the dunces who type that poorly. I won't try to understand it.

I am 12 myself, yet I type correctly even in chatrooms! Not too long ago, we were given an assignment to correct someone else's paper for a previous assignment. The person I corrected got like fifteen mistakes because they didn't capitalize their I's. Their excuse was that they were used to the program capitalizing it for them.

Is it really that bad?
It honestly has to be. I had to complete an assignment like that as well, the person didn't believe in using capitalization or punctuation. That was quite the fun time...

At least I got to enjoy the person's frustration as I told them about their mistakes as I found them. :smile.gif:
Yes, the majority of the time it is just laziness, or an improper education. I usually do not capitalize my "I's" for some reason, but i capitalize everything else. For me it's a preference i usually choose, just not my "I". Go figure.
