Remember that old topic, speculating on what if Off Topic were a town?
Well, that thread really died off, so I decided to start a fresh topic, but with more of a streamlined direction for discussion.
So. What if the Minecraft Forums were a country? In the real world (or something similar to the real world), with an functional government, economy, geographic location, culture, population, resources and more?
What problems would plague this country? What relationships would it have with other countries? What political philosophy would the government believe in and practice? What does this country's currency value to compared to other countries? How does the law enforcement work here? What rights do the citizens (you) have in this country? How does the different sections of this forum correlate to this hypothetical country? Are they cities? Provinces? States? What important holidays are celebrated here? What social problems exist in this country? Discrimination? The increasing rift between the rich and the poor? What makes a citizen rich, anyways? What would be the ethnic ratio of people? What religions would people believe in?
And who are you, citizen of this wonderful realm, do? What is the daily life of a citizen? Where do you go for holiday? Take your children to school? College? What about leisure activities?
Mind, "functional" means that, "Can work and exist in real life without utterly falling apart in a few weeks." Magic/Applied Phlebotinium is optional.
Feel free to make stories/RP about this concept. :smile.gif:
Edit: Assume this is taking place in current times and current technology.
But, would we keep the Oligarchy/Police State long?
In the forums, people have very little power in changing the administration.
As soon as any of them can effect us physically, even kill us, overthrowing the administration suddenly seems a lot more possible. Would they do so?

Theevilpplz is so fabulous, hetrosexual men turn bi when he passes by.
The mods/admins (The government/law) Act swiftly with justice, they make sure every citizen follows the rules. The "Forum discussion and info" section could represent a place in society where the citizen's get a say on what happens in this country, This would show the government is open to ideas on how to make the country a better place. The content of threads, on in a countries case, the content which the citizen puts out into the community is what makes them rich/poor. Birthdays, Easter, Halloween, Christmas and any other main holiday is celebrated. I am a tool maker, I develop things to put into the community to make the country a better place. The tutorial sections would represent Schools. The people making those tutorials would be the school teachers, and those learning would be the students.
Thats one way I would see Minecraftforum as a country :smile.gif:
There would always be people on the streets socializing with one another even if they don't know each other sometimes ranging from groups of 1-3 or groups of 10-20! People would always walk on gravel and to hold buildings up construction workers would use fence. The currency would be something like gold nuggets or iron bars or something less heavy to carry around. The government didn't have control about what the community said but they could silence them if they wanted to. (kinda like making it so people can't comment for a few days :tongue.gif:) Breaking rules could result in being kicked out of you house or if you made your house it would be taken away if it was serious but if it was not so big like it would be something like paying a fine.

You mean "Speaking about their opinion on the administration, and hoping that they listen, and the administration has no obligation to listen, or act upon, those spoken thoughts".

Yea exactlly. But in a way they still have an impact on what happens to the country, whether the idea is taken onboard or not.
Depends on what kind of reality this universe is set in and how far our society has gone in development.
Plenty of people would like to be ponies, or animated like any creature from the japanese lore.
It would be very hard to locate a midpoint for all these forms of reality (real or not) to coexist.
. . .
I'd guess the best I can do is describe my character then.
Shrouded, Heroic, Friendly, Practiced in Weaponry, Close friends among the thralls and their lords. I'd like to occupy that position of the mysterious, but also be laid back amongst my peers. A regular king of thieves perhaps.
Then again my natural need to be silly outweighs that shadowy definition.

I personally believe that as long as a certain status quo of rights is kept, there is no reason for the populace to overthrow their government for two reasons.
First of all, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Who knows if the new government ends up being worse than the old one? Most people (almost everyone) aren't willing to risk their current privileges and rights in a risky gamble for more rights--or even none at all.
Second of all, the Administration happens to have a fairly high approval ranking. Of course, with every country, there are people unhappy with their current government. In this country, there would be a large percentage of people who don't care, and a large percentage of people who DO happen to like the Administration, and are willing to fight for them to stick around.
If you shout at the ocean, and it coincidentally does the thing you were shouting at it to do, did you impact the ocean's decision?
I understand what you are trying to get at, but why are you comparing the ocean, and inanimate object, with no thought processes or emotions to someone who has morals, a brain and can make up there own mind.

They like it, because since it's in forum-form, it's never hard that large of an impact over their lives, and they have never considered that they could change it.
Would the opinion "It's better to keep the horrible regime than to risk our chances" have worked in places like Libya?
If people overthrew with a clear goal in mind, i.e. forming a democracy, then things could work out quite well.

Because he is right. The populace has no say in what the Administration decides to do. Yes, they tend to try and make their citizens happy, fed and try to improve their lives, but that doesn't mean that what you say actually applies to what is done. The government isn't a democracy, not at all.

Also the "Archive" sections (with all old Minecraft versions and Minecraft related information) could be one big library filled with all the Past history of country name here.

What are we going to call this country?
In the story that I wrote (which plot/setting revolves around this speculation) I named the country Fossoara, because:
"Fossor" means miner in Latin
"Ars" means craft in Latin.

But the Nazi party overthrew their ineffective government--and look how that turned out.
People are SATISFIED with the administration for 3 big reasons: 1. They are fed. 2. They have their circuses, and 3. They provide stability.

and crazy people talking about a Herobrine :/
"If along the way you find friends 'n they're good, they'll be good if not it's life, that's what happens"
But those are American laws. Our country (It needs a name) is an independent state with its own set of laws.
As for government, the more accurate portrayal of the staff would be as an Absolute Oligarchy/Police state.
