So if there's so much money involved why is this only done one day a year?
Good question. I suppose because most of the discounted items are closeout stuff that didn't sell well. A lot of people that rush in buy stuff they don't need and probably won't use but are only buying because they are impulse buyers.
How many of those people look like they'd honestly make waffles on a daily basis. I'd bet you five bucks at least half of them live off of a Mcdonalds diet and wouldn't know how to make a waffle if aunt Jamima kicked their front door in and showed them.
Amazing, people are dying! Oh no call the police, oh wait, they're at Black Friday, pepper spraying people who are trying to get that new TV they want. This is truely a crazy country some of us live in... still could be worse... we could be the country that made Myspace... oh wait we are! Quickly! Bomb the moon!

Let's all get along... or something optimistic like that.
So if there's so much money involved why is this only done one day a year?
There are two primary strategies in marketing, consistent low prices type, and High-low sale swings.
Consistent low prices is like Costco, where as High-Low swings is more like Wal-Mart. Having the prices at a high, and then suddenly swinging low causes a rush of people to come in and buy, it's simply not cost effective to swing really low prices all the time.
For a constant low-price type, they don't benefit as much from a black Friday type of sale, because they can't really drop their prices as much given the strategies overall already low prices.
For places like Wal-Mart that do use this strategy it really brings in even the penny-pinchers and it's a great boost to business, if short lived.
Edit: Oh yes, as stated below, it's the "Limited Time Offer" that really gets people too.
So if there's so much money involved why is this only done one day a year?
I imagine it's because the fact that it's only for a limited time drives people into an even bigger shopping frenzy. If the discounts were much more often, people wouldn't think "Only one chance to get things this cheap! Gotta buy as much as I can before it goes away!" and thus be less impulsive. When there's less of it, it's more effective.

Right, so people are being intentionally manipulated into acting this way for the sole purpose of taking their money.
But, no, the madness is the fault of the shoppers, not the system that's set itself up to exploit them in this way.
Don't get me wrong, I think people are being stupid about this, but that certainly doesn't justify taking advantage of them, or trying to paint it like it's all their fault.

Well the people in charge are as much human as those waiting in line hmm? Pretty sure, everyone's wrong here. Blood on the floor doesn't care for blame though.

I wasn't intending to put all the blame on the people. Of course the companies are taking advantage of people's often irrational behavior and stupidity. It's sometimes their fault, like the woman pepper-spraying others, but the corporations have a stake in this too for taking advantage of these idiots.
Nobody's being manipulated. They have free will. They can choose not to shop today. Hell, cigar international advertised on my facebook today. I went on their site, saw a lot of good deals, and then closed the page after deciding I've already spent enough money from my current pay check. Not buying something is the easiest thing in the world to do.

You vastly under-appreciate the value of buying something then.
Edit: Not saying it's terribly hard, but I can think of easier tasks than to not purchase something.
Oh no! Violence erupted during Black Friday sales! Obviously Black Friday is the culprit! So many maniacs together in one place, and the low prices just fuel the violence! How could this be?!
Oh, I don't know. Low class people not beyond harming others over material possessions. These are the same types of people who steal and choke the people working just to get some free stuff. In this case, they can actually afford the deals.
Black Friday is given too much news for such a lame event. Plenty of violence occurs during the rest of the year, yet no one reports it as crazy. Why? Because everyone knows of Black Friday! And if it can be called a "Deadly event", it gets more people interested.
Hell no. White trash is the worst kind of trash. The black ghetto trash in my neighborhood is bad. They've got a ton of guns and a ton of drugs. They keep to themselves though. It's the punk ass white boys that feel the need to show their ass to everyone.

I hate to generalize, but that's pretty much how it is around here. The "black-ghetto" types of people tend to keep to themselves. If you come up to them, they will either feel threatened and get mad, or just feel shy and ignore you. That's how it is in my case.
With the "white-ghetto", the people I notice are more outgoing in the worst kind of way.
If your wandering why Black friday is called balck friday, my dad told me that when companies dont have much money, they write their stuff in red. But when there doing good, they write in black. In black friday, all the companies write in black.

The funny thing is, where I work they all call it green Friday, because they're going to be getting a lot of pieces of paper with that color.

A child who recovers from a disease is always second to the child murdered down the street.
I guess it's the tragedy and drama of it that keeps people sold. Honestly though, I like my tragedy and drama in novels. The news could stand to be happy for once.

This I agree with.
It says you live in VA. By any chance it is northern VA?

No, it's just I over-appreciate the value of saving money.
Haha, alright then. I just find the feeling of a purchase so satisfying, in an irrational sort of way, but still I do.

That perfectly describes what it's like here.
