http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45417013#.Ts0l7PJbXyA Authorities raided the compound of a breakaway Amish group in eastern Ohio on Wednesday morning and arrested seven men on federal hate crime charges in hair-cutting attacks against Amish men and women.
Among those arrested were the group's leader, Sam Mullet, and three of his sons, said Mike Tobin, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Cleveland.
Authorities have said several members of the group carried out the attacks in September and October by forcefully cutting the beards and hair of Amish men and women. Cutting the hair is a highly offensive act to the Amish, who believe the Bible instructs women to let their hair grow long and men to grow beards and stop shaving once they marry.
The attacks struck at the core of the Amish identity and tested their principles. They strongly believe that they must be forgiving in order for God to forgive them, which often means handing out their own punishment and not reporting crimes to law enforcement.
Mullet told The Associated Press in October that he didn't order the hair-cutting but didn't stop his sons and others from carrying it out. He said the goal of the hair-cutting was to send a message to Amish in Holmes County that they should be ashamed of themselves for the way they were treating Mullet and his community.
"They changed the rulings of our church here, and they're trying to force their way down our throat, make us do like they want us to do, and we're not going to do that," Mullet said.
Those arrested were in custody and expected to be arraigned Wednesday. They include Mullet and sons Johnny, Lester and Daniel, Tobin said.
Authorities also were planning to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon to explain why they charged the men with hate crimes, Tobin said.
All they did was forcefully cut Amish women's hair and Amish men's beards. No hurting the people. No threats. But they were hunted down by the FBI and charged with hate crimes. This is stupid. Your thoughts?

(seriously more news threads? Just make your own mega-thread at this point...)
If it was a meaningful enough crime within their community(as it evidently was), I see it fit to be considered a hate crime.
The value of something is set by the community that interacts with it. Like language, we have assigned value to words and created syntax. If it's important to them that they keep their hair from being cut, then yes, I can see this as a hate crime.
I also don't fully understand the situation though, not being there, nor being Amish.
It is a hate crime because in their religion you need long hair and for those people to cut those others people's hair like that is a hateful hurtful statement. That is like me beating up a Muslim because I think (S)he is a terrorist.
well a hate crime is a crime against someone because of their race or religion and mullet and his sons "attacked" a core belief of that sect of the Amish religion so technically it was a hate crime
Well they did FORCE Amish people into losing something they consider part of their life style. I'd be pretty pissed if someone forced me to cut off my locks, and they don't even mean that much to me like they do to the Amish. I never liked the idea hate crimes in general, but this is really a lesson in freedom for them. You don't force people to do anything they don't want to: Or people force you to do things you don't want to, like go to jail and accept hate crime charges. Simple as that.
the clip notes version would be the Amish are Christians that have given up on modern technology to live a simple life with fewer distractions from god
Cutting someones hair isn't a crime though. It has to be a crime to be a hate crime.
Forcing someone to do something against their will? Probably through means of assault or threat? An evident attack on the religion they follow? It's abuse in one way or another, it's a crime.

It's not a crime to burn wood either, but if it happens to be part of someone else's property, then it's arson.
They attacked the religious beliefs of a specific people. They targeted a specific group of people and assaulted them - and make no mistake, forcibly holding someone and cutting their hair absolutely qualifies as assault.
Off topic, 'Mullet' is an unfortunate name for someone associated with hair crime to have.
In a dream I could see you are not far away. Anytime, Anyplace. I can see your face.
You're that special one that I have been waiting for and I hope you're looking for someone like me.

Maybe the response was drastic, getting the FBI involved and all. Something needed to be done though, it was blatant disrespect for those people's beliefs, and it does seem to fit into the hate crime category.

Religion has nothing to do with racism bro, people use it as such a broad term these days.

May I point out to you: "General Off Topic"?
Anyways, I think it's ridiculous but it is a sacred part of their religion. They should have been charged but with hate crimes? No.
