I drink (drank, got a DUI), because I have many regrets and bad memories... Plus I used to work in the most alcoholic organization on the planet....
But, I think my smoking is a bigger issue right now since I've been sober for a month or so...
Some people can handle alcohol, but all of 'em are susceptible to becoming an alcoholic.... I wish I'd listened to the facts when I was in school...
I once tried some beer. It tasted like carbonated urine.
Beer is an aqcuired taste they say. People FORCE themselves to like
alcoholic bevorages because they think that it makes you better in
some way shape or form.
PS: I'm not judging alcohol use, I'm just saying that using it instead of something else is dumb, in my humble opinion, and I'm just interested in why do people drink it.
I'm just amazed by this. You've created the perfect example of hypocrisy. There are no other words to describe this.

For the same reason they use other drugs, it makes people (usually) feel better. As for using other drugs in place of alcohol; alcohol is legal, marijuana is not in most places. If it is a legal drug, people are more likely to use it than others because it is legal and they do not want to break the law. For me, it is very simple. At times, certain memories come to mind, and alcohol helps to suppress them.
I very rarely drink, and since I turned 21 (last December), aside from beer which I only ever have two, three bottles max, I have drank about 3/4 of a bottle of whiskey. On a couple of occasions, such as at my great uncle's funeral, I have had a glass of wine or two, but I have not drank a lot of alcohol over a short period of time in many years. However, considering I am going to school for criminal justice and plan to become a cop, using illicit drugs is out of the question. That isn't because I am against them, it is simply because it is the law, and as stupid as it is, it is not anything serious enough to rebel against.
My personal opinion is to legalize it all and tax the hell out of it and have it be regulated so that at least people will be getting something that isn't laced with anything. If people want to destroy their own lives and bodies, that is their choice.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the fact that it stops people from doing worse drugs, by being a satisfier.

1. Peer pressure
2. Addiction
3. Stress-relief
...it can't really get more simple than that.
Let's all get along... or something optimistic like that.
