PS: I'm not judging alcohol use, I'm just saying that using it instead of something else is dumb, in my humble opinion, and I'm just interested in why do people drink it.
PPS: Partially, this opinion is derived from the fact I have been in some stressful and dangerous situations only caused by alcohol and its users- like me almost dying from alcohol poisoning.
you just contradicted yourself, in the same sentence no less.
I think that the negatives of alcohol are exaggerated by the fact that it's legal. Then further blown out of proportion because it's used as an argument to legalize other drugs.
Generally alcohol isn't used 'as a drug,' usually it's just a drink. Depending on the drink it can take a lot of alcohol before someone actually gets the drug effect.
I drink sometimes because I like the taste. With beer I enjoyed the numbing effects it had. I felt so calm and tingly and happy. Though I don't have the urge for beer anymore after too many takes at the porcelain shrine. Had a few wine coolers the other day because they taste good. The alcohol content is very tiny so there's no risk.
The last time I drank "socially", since my boyfriend doesn't like booze anyways, was with my mom. Had a couple of new drinks at a bar and that was fun. Again the % was pretty tiny in those drinks so it didn't do much. Just tasted nice.
Some drug, like LSD, are simply terrible. That graph is horribly deceptive about the safety of certain drugs. LSD, which seems like one of the safest, does irreparable damage to your brain every time you indulge. It's one thing to use a drug to temporarily assist you, such as caffeine for a bust of energy. It's another to take a drug that will forever handicap your capacity to live a normal life.
I respect you opinion like many others in this thread, but i ask you to question your perception of good and bad. People tend to base their "Knowledge" of substances based on what society generally thinks. I can assure you psychedelics are among the safest substances to ingest; Responsibly. We could sit here and rank anything and compare apples to oranges which i'm not necessarily against. Its all about responsibility, anything and everything has the potential to be "good or bad". Alcohol is surely fun, and a true catalyst for sociability, however i could sit and tell you about the dangers of drunk driving, alcoholism and etc. This is the same for anything. Drugs like lsd; if you read up on it have VERY little health risk (that is if you take it responsibly or within a sane amount) but i am not going to say it IS harmless as people with preexisting conditions or vulnerabilities to psychological disorders are at a much higher risk for them to surface. Everything must be looked at as an individual, i wouldn't recommend a teenager or adult that has any doubt in their mental stability or lack of knowledge(Research of said substance) to ingest a psychedelia drug. Just like i would not give a 13 year old a bottle of jack and simply hope they don't do something stupid. However none of this matters, as we all know humans are fairly thick headed and i feel like i'm just rambling like a hippie burnout, but all i ask is that u don't speak with such certainty about anything.
Specific to your quote (not trying to start a fight)
"does irreparable damage to your brain every time you indulge"
Please cite me a source for this, the irony behind this is even the US goverment did extensive research on LSD like many other drugs and this was surely not a finding (well untill nixon :/)
"It's one thing to use a drug to temporarily assist you, such as caffeine for a bust of energy."
i would argue the complete opposite, the benefits of ingesting psychedelics are countless(keeping in mind what i said) even from a terrible experience you are guaranteed to learn a substantial bit about yourself. Taking a thought from a favorite book (breaking open the head), "drugs are a catalyst for the mind", meaning that you don't need drugs to learn/explore/expand your mind as there is things like meditation or whatever works for you but it is surely a method of it.
"It's another to take a drug that will forever handicap your capacity to live a normal life."
simply not true, i don't feel like bringing a list of examples but i can bet you where unaware that steve jobs himself indulged in Lysergic acid diethylamide(and i hate apple :/)
I'm curious of you opinion on pharmaceuticals, as many of the most common prescription drugs are high on government schedules. Heroin = Opiates (Oxycontin, Vicodin, etc), Meth/Speed = Amphetamines (vyvanse, adderol, etc; which i bet 1/2 this forum is on lol)
sorry im bored :/ oops i never read second page, redundant of others post.
I would try acid if I could find any
(it ain't easy.)
One doesn't simply find 'cid, it finds you :wink.gif:
and on your post before my wall o text, i agree that responsibility can be taken with a grain of salt. its responsibility + common sense + other factors. like none of us have ever gotten black out drunk/sick to the point where u say "never again" lol
And does that really seem that outlandish for people to do? At face value it makes no sense, but it's something that's just a reality.
i totally agree, i know when i drink it is simply to have a good time. I don't like the thought or ethics of it but socially its what we do. If you guys think its dumb to drink out of "social pressure" you must have been homeschooled haha.
A(and I won't list them here because the last time I mentioned it the response was five giant walls of texts about how I make unacceptable generalizations... You can look up the study for yourself though).
Meh, I'm sure it's already been posted but...
Alcohol is an escape from the world, from reality.
'Casual drinkers', the people who will drink a beer every now and again and etc., typically do so because of the induced relaxation from alcohol's effects on the body, psychological tendancy to conform to others' stnadards, and/or because of acquired taste.
For heavier drinkers and binge drinkers...
It impairs inhibitions, and allows suppressed people to be whom they want to be... or perhaps, it'd be more accurate to say, be who they don't want to be when they are sober, yet secretly want to be deep down inside. It allows people to escape the reality from which causes their problems, which they typically do not want to face. Subconsciously, alcohol allows these people to hide from reality's problems, by creating an alternate reality for the individual, by reducing inhibitions to possibly the point that they don't even exist. They typically see reality as too 'restrained' and confined, and basically boring... But an uninhibited world, typically encouraged by others with them who are uninhibited, allows one to live without the restraints of the physical world, reality... And therefore allows people to find safety in the alternate reality, in which does not have laws and rules to enforce the pressures of reality.
In essence, it allows these people to escape their problems and hide in a fantasy world where their problems don't exist.
This is usually a cyclical issue, where the alcohol, and 'escapes from reality', almost always exacerbate the problems because of inconsistencies between realities and therefore give the user more reason to indulge and retreat to their safety-world.
... This sometimes results in one sinking themselves into true depression from the inconsistency of defining a higher reality or prioritizing importance of a reality.
tl;dr:
People drink because of Psychological and Physiological issues... Dur.
You're entirely right. Alcohols are poisonous. Methanol... Propanol... Butanol... that kind of stuff is terrible for you. You'll die if you drink it.
Ethanol, though, is actually pretty good for you, if you drink the right amount.

hahaha, casual drinking is a lot more than a lot of people seem to think on here. People who drink more than the odd beer every now and again aren't ****in' binge drinkers. In my world, binge drinking is the ritual of going out with the intent to drink as much as you possibly can before shut-down - and doing that week after week after week.
4-5 pints of average strength beer is a normal amount on a night out for me (our pint is 20 fl.oz, not 16, btw)and personally I don't find that to be excessive.
You're implying from my statements more than was suggested.
I was carelessly labeling 'casual drinking' intently, for others to gather their own definitions and so I didn't need to clarify anymore than I already did (oops, I failed)... Although, your classification of 'binge drinking' is far over par.
One night out of 'drinking till you puke' is enough to classify "binge-drinking".
A "binge" is literally: "A short period devoted to indulging in an activity, esp. drinking alcohol, to excess."
(Source: Google definitions.)
Note "a short period".... Add 'drinking' to 'binge' and you get.... 'A night devoted to indulging in alcohol to excess'.
Drinking wine every evening at lunch or dinner, as custom in some areas, is casual...
Drinking wine until you pass out and/or puke? That's a binge.
If people go out week after week doing this, they are not only binge-drinkers, but mostly likely alcohol addicts, too... I suggest you go read up on 'alcoholism', if you care to disagree.
All things can be used in moderation by responsible adults with out lasting harm. A person's reasons for doing so are their own. Personally the reasons a person does something do not matter, what matters most is that we learn to respect the choices of others regardless of our own prejudices.

B. They joined the crowd
C. They like the drinks they put it in (Ex: Beer, wine, liquor, liqueur: Most notably Jagermeister, etc.)
Nah, I'm kidding. I drink because I can but it's at a social rate so I'm in no danger.
Also this except for the peer pressure part. I never bought into peer pressure.
More people going on about something like this, the less I care.
That's why I drink it.
For the longest times, humans have done the simplest things to achieve the former in that above. Even spinning around. We love altered states of mind.
My DeviantArt, so sexy
I don't see the problem in alcohol, just dont drink too much
