One of the fundamental things about physics is that NOTHING can travel faster than light. And if a few particles do it, what's to stop a few more, and more, until you're hurling cows everywhere at lightspeed.
This goes with Einstein's theory (The faster you move, the slower time goes), if a particle travels at the speed of light, time stands still for it. But if a particle travels faster than light, time moves backwards for it. (and Vice versa)
People thought that nothing could be faster than light, thus meaning that time travel was impossible.
I couldn't imagine how they could channel this and use it transport a living being though.
Thank goodness. Einstein was really starting to tick me off with his whole "You'll never own a pet alien" theory.
But really, I think it's probably just misreadings or malfunctions, and this is exactly the kind of scientific miscalculation that would get the most views on a news site.

A little FYI for you here: About 70% of the worlds discoveries were because of malfunctions.
I don't see why some of you are acting like this is a big deal.
1. The experiment has not been retested yet. It isn't "confirmed" until it can be successfully replicated and produce the same results somewhere else.
2. It changes nothing in real life. Obviously the world isn't going to change overnight even if this is confirmed.
3. Even if it is true, it has no real applications for real life in the foreseeable future. It definitely does not imply anything about "time travel"... not even close.
The only thing it does is change the way we view 'theoretical physics', like some of quantum mechanics. Nothing more than that.
And about the "time travel" issue. Like I said, it does not imply anything about that. It does not mean you can travel forward or backwards in time, at all. Technically, it could be said that we are all "time travellers" because we always move FORWARD in time. We can even speed up that process or even slow it down very slightly, relative to everyone else.
Space travel, itself, includes leaving the Earth's gravitational field and therefore "speeding up time" relative to the people on Earth. However, that "time travel" is only at the rate of microseconds, and astronauts are not able to observe the time difference because it is so minor. But they did in fact travel forward in time compared to Earth, even if they did so unknowingly.
Even if someone were able to "ride" a neutrino at a speed above 'lightspeed' for one earth-year, they would arrive in the location one earth-year later, yet they would be slightly "younger" than when they left... actually they wouldn't be "younger", per se, but really be "erased from existence" for a few (micro)seconds, since the "younger" version of themselves did not "ride" the neutrino, yet....
Therefore, they would not exist on arrival... but then they would "pop into existence" at a later time after arrival, after they got on board to "ride" it, which occurred at a time AFTER the arrival...
To the one riding the neutrino, their ride would seem 'negatively short', as the neutrino would have arrived at the destination a few seconds before they even got to "ride" it. So they would appear at their destination before they even 'got on board'. Basically, they would skip a few seconds after attempting to 'ride' and 'not-exist' until arrival.
Those few seconds would be non-existent to the 'rider', while observers would think that the 'rider' is the one who is non-existent for those few seconds.
Make sense?... Probably not, but that's okay because it's all THEORETICAL. :smile.gif:
3. Even if it is true, it has no real applications for real life in the foreseeable future. It definitely does not imply anything about "time travel"... not even close.
Although you might be correct in you assessment that if true, this has no real life applications in the foreseeable future, It definitely DOES imply everything about "time travel". If this proves correct, theoretically, "time travel" is possible.
Which is totally why I mentioned in my post that we WAIT AND SEE. Do we NON-Scientist types really care this much to get into a Einstein / Bohr Debate ? Seriously people.
Naw, guys, just measured a neutrino with some tape and my kitchen clock. It went at JUST under the speed of light. CERN must've just made a mistake; probably in that whole division issue...
------------------------------------------------------------------
Einstein was wrong about a lot of other things anyway; I don't know why people are so surprised at that as much as the fact that it would be taking a crap on a theory widely accepted for over half a century (if these results were correct, but I assume they are not, just from my perspective).

Facepalm is simply not enough to express how I feel right now................................................................
Anyway, read the ENTIRE FREAKIN POST before replying.
As I said, it has NOTHING to do with time travel, and I explained why. So if you don't freakin' understand quantum physics, DON'T TALK ABOUT IT, MMKAY!?
For realz, yo i am totullee srs
No, for real, really. I actually am serious...... just don't go there, you're making my brain hurt.
I personally don't think that the speed of light has any relevance to time travel and I really don't understand where that thought even came from. It doesn't even make sense. Hooray you can go really fast. How does that speed mean that you can travel through time? Never made any sense in my head

As you move faster time slows for you. Hard to explain why, read more.
And when you start moving faster than light, time slows down to become reversed. Basically, you are travelling through time if you would travel faster than light!

There's no genuine proof from anyone though that have experienced it to say its true though. Its all just theoretical. There's no proof.
I think you're right in this case, but I wonder about how long such a thing can continue.
As with my LHC example, I doubt any other political body is willing to fund the billions needed to test claims made by the LHC. It's not like this money comes from a successful business plan or even an independently wealthy philanthropist. It takes a large political machine, such as the European Union or the United States to fund the deep scientific projects we're running into. As the barriers of entry for verifying (much less understanding) scientific studies continues, the potential to be mislead continues as well. The goal may be noble, but the path to get there might not be what we expect.
Hold on, I forgot about the easy button. We should just use one of those, instead and save us the hard work.
Touche but what about the mega rich? Clearly I would prefer groundbreaking technologies (FTL, Teleportation, Cryogenics, etc) to be discovered (and regulated!) by a public entity but surely private companies can see the benefit. Yes, most business men would say an investment like that is both risky and long term (and therefor bad) but I could easily see some bored billionaire getting it into his head that discovering some great technology is worth the investment if only to immortalize his/her name in the history books. The motivating factors of the disgustingly rich aren't always logical or fiscally driven.

No it wouldn't.
Indeed I do.

I don't think people are shocked because the theory was wrong. I imagine they are shocked because it means Einstein was wrong.

Okay, say you have a light producing source with light coming out one direction...
(Still Source)-->(Light)-->
The light is moving at the speed of light.
Now lets say the source is moving backwards at 10 mph.,
<-(moving)-(10mph Source)-->(Light)-->
The light is moving at the speed of light minus 10mph.
Ok, now it's moving forward by 10mph.
(Source)->(moving)-->(Light)-->
Now the light is moving at what speed?
I always thought the answer was "the speed of light plus 10mph", and I could never understand why I would be wrong.
There's no genuine proof from anyone though that have experienced it to say its true though. Its all just theoretical. There's no proof.
That is actually wrong.

gravity isn't a theory but I'm not gonna get into this ridiculous pissing contest.
