I have the flags of my enemies on my lawn to show hat I disagree with them. the flags of the middle east and a rainbow one.

“Daddy, I had a bad dream.”You blink your eyes and pull up on your elbows. Your clock glows red in the darkness — it’s 3:23. “Do you want to climb into bed and tell me about it?”“No, Daddy.”The oddness of the situation wakes you up more fully. You can barely make out your daughter’s pale form in the darkness of your room. “Why not, sweetie?”“Because in my dream, when I told you about the dream, the thing wearing Mommy’s skin sat up.”For a moment, you feel paralyzed; you can’t take your eyes off of your daughter. The covers behind you begin to shift.
The OP is obviously ignorant and has never been exposed to the real world outside of his house.
People die every day because of their oppressive government. People live in the streets, gathering food scraps to stay alive. People live in constant fear of being gunned down by drug dealers. People don't have the money to get by, and cut out their kidney to sell. People live with the birth defects of military grade herbicides generations later. People die of disease and with their children die in their arms because they haven't the money, technology, or resources to do anything.
Living in a first world country is something to be proud of, but so many people take it for granted.
That is the different between "being born HERE not THERE"
Seriously don't you guys find it weird that someone is capable of feeling pride for a country?
Hells yea bros I was born HERE not THERE!!!!! AMERICAAAA!!!
Patriotism doesn't make sense. People should have business relationships with their country.
Humanity thrives on competition. On the small scale, you have neighbors one-upping each other with bigger screens, better cars, better satellite dishes, and other amenities. On the larger scale, you have City Vs city sports of various types. There are also Provincial and State "rivalries" in the form of things like gridiron/football, as well as with the aforemention City Vs City stuff when the two cities are also in separate provinces/states.
Above that, you of course have the country rivalries, which exist in the olympics and "World championship" events.
What is bad and pointless is militaristic nationalism.
I also love how the OP explicitly states american flags, as if, you know, nobody else matters. kind of ironic in a way.
Do you know what the fertile crescent is? It's also sometimes called the "cradle of civilization" the oldest human fossils are found there. It's also where the oldest known civilization was (Sumeria). It is modern day Iraq. Ancient history is the bee's knees. You should read some.
Actually, that's Africa. The earliest human civilizations arose in the middle east, Egypt, Pakistan and China, but the earliest humans (at least the earliest animals that are biologically similar enough to be considered humans) arose in Africa some 200 thousand years ago. Civilizations are a comparatively recent development having only shown up 9-10 thousand years ago (with large city-states showing up a few thousand years after that).

Pride is not the same as being happy you live in the first world.

I would have an Australian flag, but I'm not that patriotic, and the Australian flag is horrible (Though not really as bad as the American flag.)
It has the Union Jack on it, which makes it instantly look like 100s of other flags in the world.
And also the New Zealand flag is almost identical, with just 2 stars missing, and the stars are red.

I like America (it's pretty much the bee's knees). I like the flag, and what it stands for, but it's silly to feel pride in it. None of the people with flags hanging on their front porches have contributed much, if anything, to the country or its ideals. Also, as the OP pointed out, it's kinda creepy to be proud of being born in one place rather than another.
What a bunch of nonsense. Just on the block I live in we have 7 people including myself who've been in the military. We have small business owners, school teachers, a doctor and a nurse, a fire fighter, and couple police men. All these people have contributed to the country and pretty much everyone especially adults contribute largely. Only a spoiled child would feel no pride in a place that offers them so many opportunities.
Nationalism is akin to an animal exclaiming how much it loves its cage...
So would you be happier or better off in a country that had no government (absolute freedom?) if you believe that your country is a metaphorical cage preventing you from doing God knows what?
Seriously don't you guys find it weird that someone is capable of feeling pride for a country?

I think it's quite alright. It would be nice if more people did it, but I know not everyone feels the same way about their own country, nor does everyone express their appreciation the same way.

You must be the same type of weirdo that would feel pride in a giant multinational corporation because you take out its trash every night. In one of its buildings.
Why is pride the correct emotion for living somewhere with more opportunities than other places? The rational reaction would be to feel lucky and make the best of it, not get all gung-ho and fall in love with some lines on a map.

"cradle of civilization" is a misnomer invented by eurocentrist scientists, really, since it ignores all the other places where civilization emerged. Yangzi/Yellow River valleys, Indus valley, the Andes just to name a few...
I don't know where the oldest human fossils were found, but I doubt it's is Mesopotamia. :wink.gif:
correctness is the bee's knees and the wasp's elbows, daddy.
Thanks for the info you two. I base a lot of my "facts" off of a public education (which I didn't value at the time). I'll educate myself later as I am getting ready for my economics class.

You seem like a very negative person who only see's the bad in everything. I would say most adults that have truly done something with their life would hold some pride in the life they made and the community they helped to build. I don't have some blind patriotism that makes me feel the country is #1 and we can do no wrong.

Life isn't as black and white as you make it out to be. You seem to believe having pride in one's county equals some sort of extremest. I think countries are more then lines on a map, evil corporations, and corrupt governments or what ever it is you seem to see. I believe a person who doesn't feel any pride towards their country probably has done very little for it.

And then there are the people who believe pride is morally wrong and humility should be encouraged.

And those humans were immigrants from the moon.... which is a giant space ship that the government is keeping secret. That's why we don't do any more moon landings.
