Why do people take pride in something as random as their ethnicity, or the place they were born? It doesn't make much sense to me.
When people make comments like "Proud to be American," or "Black Pride," or "White Pride," I just don't understand why someone takes pride in something
1) As random as their birth place or race, which they have no control over whatsoever.
2) Taking pride in accomplishments they didn't help in the least. I applaud and definitely respect those who have done things like build countries, or help spread equality, but I don't feel any "prouder" than everyone else should about them. Just because they were the same race as me, or lived in the same state as me, I don't feel any reason to take pride in the fact that they DID live in the same area as me, or were the same color as me. I respect their accomplishments, not their similarities to me.
I think the sooner people stop taking pride in pointless things, and building unnecessary social and racial barriers around things, the sooner we can all accomplish as humans, and not just accomplish as Americans, or blacks, or whites, or Hungarians, or whatever.
If you have a different opinion on the matter, I'd love to hear it.

They appreciate how they were raised and won't stop at anything to let someone know that criticizing someone that they can't change is a waste of precious time. It's true that we need to stop caring about things as simple as this and raise ourselves to a higher potential, but that won't be coming anytime soon.
Oh yeah, inb4 the George Carlin clip that is basically about the same topic :wink.gif:

Its something that keeps us going
That makes us never stop, we fight for what we love. (In that case "Proud to be an American)
To be proud in your beliefs, that you are what you are (In this case "Black pride" or "White Pride)
We stay strong through the thick and thin, through the shittiest, through the best
Pride is what keeps us going, and many more
I cant put it into words very well, ill let someone try better
(BTW, Why the hell are you asking this on the Minecraft forums?)
I think they just identify with people similar to them. And depending on what their opinion of their race/ethnicity/heritage is, they can be proud or ashamed.
Your avatar suggests that you are proud to be a narwhal :tongue.gif:

Doesn't make sense to me. Actually, when you think about it, it's like "reverse" rascism/discrimination, which singles out others because of their ethnicity or where they were born.

I agree. A lot of people will say things like "I'm proud to be american because we were on the moon first" or something to that accord. Not sure where they get the "we" from in that sentence though, they just sat on their asses and watched some other people on TV; or, more likely, weren't even born yet. To be fair they are still better than conspiracy theorists who denounce those accomplishments.

I agree. One can be proud of ones accomplishments, but I don't know how anybody can be proud of simply- existing. It's not like that is difficult.

eeyup.

Indeed. Differentiating Race/colour/birthpace/nation/religion, regardless of the contest, builds the barriers to cooperation that you mention. Of course another problem is there are some religions that basically require the building of such walls, in many ways, but that's another issue altogether.

Its okay actually, i just skipped to the middle and it was totally ear rape moment.
Yuh. His voice was kind of a turn-off when I first downloaded the album, but I've learned to like it upon repeated listenings. This was just one of the best songs to capture my feelings, I suppose.

Yeah I don't get it. Like with patriotism and stuff. You see everyone go on about "AUSSI PRIDE!!!!11!!!1" here, but I don't get it... What exactly are you proud of? You haven't actually.. done anything, have you? I mean, yay, you were born, but so was everyone else..

This. You can support your country, but it was just luck of the draw you got born where you did. I'm not going to act like I'm contributing to the country though, because the truth is, I'm not. Just like the majority of people. Most are just living and going about their daily lives. Not doing substantial things to help one's country.
Being in the military though, is prolly' a different story. I could understand taking pride in your country when you serve for it, I suppose.

I find it amusing that people here can't see how others could take pride in something they were born into but, could easily see how someone could take pride in a sports team that none of the players probably grew up in your hometown and yet people will easily get freaked out about it.
I am proud of my country because we stand for individualism over collectivism, freedom of speech even if I don't want to hear it (for the most part), and for being a place that one baby isn't better than another one solely because of who their parents were. Considering how many first world countries don't have all three of these I am proud that I live in a country like that.
You can argue people in circles about whether those things truly exist in a country. But, saying that I actually believe they do, can you see how I would be proud?
Pride is usually the tool of those up top. Tell everyone the extravagant wonderful things certain people or groups of people did in the past, ignoring the horrible things certain people or groups of people did, and they'll generally be sold to die for them. I don't give a ****, and I don't really care that I don't give a ****. The pride that's not being used as a tool can be used as a tool, if one figures out what it is. Which can be something simple, such as being proud of making something. Or even being proud of where your/a child has gone (Could even be a teacher, or something else entirely.)
I realize people would argue against that, but, kidnap the child you hold pride for, you're more likely to go to greater lengths to get it back. Possibly even death in some scenarios. And the same with being proud of making something. If something were to jeopardize it, you'll most likely go to great lengths to protect it. Of course, in some cases people are just trying to protect hard work, weather they're proud of it or not, so that can be a bit strange. Either way, I feel I've said what's important.
This also plays into the military's greatest of weapons.
Pride. With pride they get people to throw their lives down. With pride they can save the ones who are up top within the government. Sadly, pride can often corrupt anyone, even people who would have probably made nice contributions to society.
Unfortunately, I don't give a damn about society. They can shove their damn pride up their arses.
As for the song, I don't like the genre, but I guess the message that's intended is displayed in the beginning.
If people weren't proud of the ransom situation they were thrust into in life, then they'd have no reason to ever feel pride in anything. What you just did is a veiled attack against any and all pride simply on the grounds that you feel pride has an arbitrary source.
I think there's an important distinction between saying something like "Proud to be an American" and "Black Pride." Saying you're proud of being American is idiotic, because you don't choose which country you were born in, and simply being American has no positive value. The difference with Black Pride (at least in America), is that blacks are an oppressed people, so they are saying they are proud of being black in a society where being black is considered wrong.

This has so many problems with it I don't even know where to begin. So I won't. I don't have the time. =(

Basically, both are really the same thing.
Yeah maybe I should have changed that to you don't choose where you were born.
Yeah, it does. If you deny the fact that white privilege exists in modern society, you're being ignorant.
Good strategy there.
