True. I've never heard of this armor stuff you keep talking about. I'll have to look it up. Is there a vid?
Edit: So you're talking about the armor in Halo? I thought you were talking about something real.
Well first off... if I was in a giant mech I'd probably just step on the footsoldiers. That's what I do in the game anyway. Sometimes I'll step on the tanks and hovercrafts too but I usually take a little damage from that.
I'm not an engineering expert but I think bipedal mechs make more sense (provided the technology to make them walk stably). Bipedal legs can traverse a broader range of terrain. A tank-like mech with treads might not be able to make it up certain hills/mountains. Of course, using that logic hover-mechs make the most sense but when we're talking about something that is 50-100 tons it just doesn't seem likely to fly unless we develop anti-gravity technology.
Yeah, I guess we will have exoskeletal suits before mechs, I think thats just logical, but, I wasn't saying treads would be good, I was saying it was more practical, I mean, modern bipedal androids have trouble moving, a mech would need a weight, and lots of accelerometers.
Also, I was going to say the Mjolnir armor isn't an exo-skeletal suit, but, I wasn't an idiot, and I googled it, and yes, it technically is...

Well I think the time factor is an issue here. You raised the excellent point about the energy consumption of mechs being impractical and my reply was that it might not be a problem for future science... the same goes for the leg technology. I'd actually venture a guess that we'll master the leg technology first; considering the demand for android worker robots.
Obviously this is a FAIL video... but we're not going to stop trying because one robot can't make it up some steps during a public trial. Mechs are far future tech and I don't think it is irrational to predict walking-robotics to be stable by then.

I don't know of any real 'mech' armor other than what you've already linked. All we really have to go on besides those are things in books/games.
I thought Mechwarrior 2 was the best in the series. You had a lot more freedom for building your mechs. Mech Commander is another really good Battletech game.
The boardgame is also a lot of fun. You can buy a bunch of different models and paint them up how you want. You only use a max of five for each player in a game, so it's a heck of a lot less time and money consuming than Warhammer. It's also pretty easy to get into, with expanded rules for more advanced players.
And if you haven't played Armored Core, that's another pretty good mech game.
Oh, and Mjolnir armor is what Master Chief wears in Halo. Not really a mech if you ask me, it's just powered armor.

You mean Warhammer 40k? I guess if you're talking about the board game side, it does get really expensive.
And what do you mean, it's just powered armor? Without an augmented skeleton it rips your arm off! It's certainly as strong as most mech suits, though in the end it is just an exoskeleton.

Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, whatever. They are both expensive.
And yes, it's powered armor. Mechs are vehicles with cockpits, they are not something you wear.
I have a feeling at least one military in the world has made something like this in real life. They're just waiting for the right occasion to use it (i.e. WW3)
That or they're just too expensive to build...

I highly doubt anyone has made a mech... aside from non-military fans creating replicas which don't actually work. They're just too impractical right now. If a country did make mechs and tried to use them they'd probably be ineffective against tanks and aircraft.

Really? I hadn't considered getting into the minis. I tried getting into Warhammer 40k but it's just so damned expensive. Mechwarrior's limit on unit size sounds like it would really reduce the overall cost of the game. I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

I meant on a smaller scale but I am pretty sure the military is working on robots in real life...just maybe not THAT big.
Dunno if its already been mentioned, but the "mechs" in armoured core, mmm, love that customisation.
You could make anything from light to heavy mechs, two legs, reversed joint, gunarms, normal arms, bladearms, bladearms that shoot disks, hovering or caterpiller legs, spider legs! :biggrin.gif:
Flamers, Rifles, Lasers, Plasma, Rockets, Artillery...
Cool looking V shaped heads to dome heads to antenna heads
radars, cloaks, minelaunchers....
It was all good fun :biggrin.gif:
Medium Quadlegs :biggrin.gif:
Heavy Normal Legs
Light Mech

Your friendly neighborhood dragon. Don't be scared, I won't bite!
I am here for you, Don't be afraid to send me a message.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves Macross here. :smile.gif:
I'm a huge Macross fan, and I have several Macross models at various scales.
I really need to get one of the new Macross Frontier Supers, but they are like $130, so I've held off on that.
I also have several gundam models, too. They are pretty cool, too... although, I don't really like the show at all. I just like the toys models.
Seriously, make a point dude. Don't just troll people.
You implied that the mech you posted could own all other mechs, and therefore the topic was over...
illford posted the SDF-1 from Macross, which is an enormous mech that makes all other mechs look like ants... easily owning the one you posted which was pretty small, and making you and your post look pretty ignorant on the subject...
Now you post a troll pic implying he's dumb... where are you going with this, besides making yourself look even worse than you already did?

Yeah I understand. I was just expressing my confusion. I don't play Halo so I didn't know what the armor was.
Meh. The books are a good read. :smile.gif:

nice toy you got there...
also, not only is the giant robot with aircraft carriers for arms a mech, but the small airpanes you see? also mechs.
*there may or may not be cake
The best mech.
I always thought this was the best mech, personally:
