This has had me perplexed for some time. In no way am I racist, but this just seems stupid. If some non-white person (Mexican, Black, Korean, etc.) calls a white person honkey, he doesn't think twice. He just says "meh...", but if you call a black guy the 'N' word, they completely freak out and go berserk. Again, I'm not racist, but this is a very perplexing topic to me.
I'm white, French Canadian to be exact, and I honestly don't care if someone calls me honkey. I understand that it is offensive, and that's why I would never say it to save my life, but it just seems so stupid. Now, 'black' is derived from the Latin word 'negro', and in Spanish, negro is how you say black.
'La copa es de color negro.' = 'The cup is black.'
Did black people make white people slaves for years and years and call them "honkey"?
theres why
Oh lord. If one more person plays the slavery card...
Look. Here's the deal with slavery. It ended over 100 years ago (about 146 if my quick mental math/historic facts are correct). It applies in no way to the modern world. It's a stretch to apply it to the South, but certainly not the North. White people aren't evil because a few of their ancestors had slaves.
Additionally, most slaves were actually treated fairly well. Most slave owners worked in the fields with their slaves, if they had more than one. It was very uncommon to have many slaves in the Old South. They ate the same food. That's why after emancipation, many slaves went back to their former masters, and kept doing what they had been doing.
Most of what people today equate with slavery is what occurred on the large plantations owned by extremely wealthy families, with up to hundreds of slaves. This was actually fairly uncommon. Not surprisingly, there weren't that many extremely wealthy families with gigantic plantations.

I have thought about that, and your argument is invalid. Every single slave who once lived is now dead, younger people can't use that as an excuse. Especially because our president is black. Not to mention that every person who once owned a slave is now dead as well.
Okay I acknowledge that I was wrong, there are still people from those times, but few. Younger people still have no reason to use that as an excuse.

Yet we still have white people treating black people like they should be slaves
Yet we still have white people treating black people like they should be slaves
And we don't have black people treating white people like THEY should be slaves? There's always going to be conflict in this world, discrimination is no exception. It will always exist until the last human is dead.

What does the President being black have to do in any way with the slavery card?

You have got to be kidding me. The thirteenth amendment was ratified in 1865. That was 146 years ago.
Unless you've mixed up slavery with segregation. In which case, you need a better education.

Social Studies was never my strong point, but that doesn't change my point at all, in fact you helped me. No more slaves exist, nor do slave owners. Our president being black means that blacks are equal, and they shouldn't care what someone else says.

De jure, yes. De facto, no.
There is still segregation. There is still immense inequality. And it can't be fixed easily. Had the reconstruction following the Civil War been done properly, we would be better off. But, alas, it wasn't, and we still have problems.
Because black people choose to get offended when a non black person says ******. Alternatively, people need to learn that insults come from intent, not content. The same way I choose not to bet offended when someone calls me Whitey, or Blue-eyed devil.
My friends and I call each other "fag moron" all the time. One of us is gay, he has no issue with it because he knows we mean no offense.

Look it's big red text!
Now that being said. Ponies.

Clearly noted, now let's stay on topic. Here's another issue. We all know what the KKK is (hopefully). The KKK tries to convert people by convincing them that black people are bad. One such way is by making them lose it by using the word. If everyone were to simply ignore them, the KKK would become increasingly weak.
I remember a story of a single black man who got three people to leave the KKK just by ignoring them. He was tolerant of them, which is what they didn't expect, because the KKK deceived them into thinking they were something bad.
Which brings me back to the original discussion. The 'N' word would become weaker and eventually fade out of peoples' memory, and I'm sure that's what they want.

Though a lot of the black people that I know take great offense to it, whether the other person means offense or not.
There's a huge difference between "you ****ing ******" and "whats up my *****".
But we are taught not to use these words as they are offensive.
Well I've never heard of a Honkey in my life, but think about what you just said.. You said all black people skitz out at you if you call them a ******, but no white people care if you call then a "honkey". Whoa.. That's a MASSIVE generalisation there.
Also, don't write "I'm not racist" after every sentence. If you're not saying anything racist you shouldn't have to say that, and to me "I'm not racist, but..." generally translates as "I'm about to say something racist, but let's pretend it isn't."
Also, a minor thing.. "black" isn't derived from "negro" at all. It's germanic. The words just mean the same thing.

I didn't... Did I?
English comes from Latin, the Latin word for black is negro.
I never said all, but I will say most. I'm from Detroit, and I've seen masses burn down a garage because of it.

English is actually a mixture of French and Germanic.
And there's not much of a topic here. There's someone being confused about a word no one else has ever heard, a serious lacking in knowledge of history, and racial stereotypes.

Not much of a topic here, tbh.
I noticed that most of the threads here tend to go offtopic after about the second or third page.

It's all so strange to me, I just don't get it.
theres why
I can't explain it. It makes very little sense to me.
The only answers I can come up with would be seen as extremely racist, so I'll keep them to myself. This community seems sort of uptight about racism.

Still, French =/= latin
