It's not really a religious afterlife, just so much as it is your brain creating a "stasis" to make your death most comfortable. I'm sure if you're religious it would be a religious afterlife (Christian heaven, Jewish heaven, etc,) I haven't thought of what would happen if you don't believe in any sort of afterlife. I guess it would just be "nothing," as what would "technically" happen in real life.
Trust me, it's more confusing trying to string together these trains of thoughts in a slightly understandable fashion.
If you roll over in your coffin, do you flinch like you do in your dreams sometimes? Just kidding haha. But I get what your trying to say... what happens to the people who are.. err sorry I can't think of the word right now, but when they're turned to ash. (Goddamn, now I can't remember what word it is...)

EDIT: CREMATED, that's it :smile.gif:
I think he means it happens while you are in the process of dying, not after you are completely dead.
I'm a Christian, but I like to believe there is always other options. I'm not deeply religious, but according to my religious friends if you believe in God, your a Christian, so I guess I am.
If you believe in God, you're a theist. If you believe in Jesus as your savior, then you are Christian.
You can't be a Christian without believing Jesus was your savior.
Your friends are wrong and likely a bit ignorant about other religions. :tongue.gif:
But I have to doubt Heaven and Hell. Heaven can only be this amazing glorious place for a short amount of time, if it's perfect, then what is there worth your time? You'll just be stuck in a place where you can get anything and have no motivation no reason to keep going, it would become hell if you spent eternity in heaven. I mean, the drive for humanity is essentially death, or struggle; unless there's a completely different drive in the afterlife and we no longer keep the 'human-mindset' then maybe heaven would be the greatest thing.
I don't know of a religion where they believe you keep the 'human mindset' in the after life, nor do I know of one where you possess a physical body where anything like 'motivation' might apply.
Eternal happiness is eternal happiness. It doesn't need to be motivated.
And just to note, not all Christians believe fully in the concepts of 'Heaven' and 'Hell' as a lot of Christians believe. Christianity (and many religions) have many different and widely varying views of things like the afterlife even within themselves.
Actually, rather than a discussion about what you believe is in the afterlife, how about, what do you want to happen after death?
What would I WANT?
Personally, I'd want to be a 'god' myself and be able to create my own universe and play around in it however I wanted, like an ultimate 'video game' that I would be completely in control of... For me, that would be 'eternal happiness'. :tongue.gif:
I still don't understand why people are commenting "Nothing happens." Is that what you want to happen? Because the question wasn't 'what are your beliefs' it was what would you want to happen after death? I sure as hell wouldn't want to rot in dirt for the rest of eternity. Be a little creative people, loosen up.

It's called MRTTIS. 'Must Reply To Topic Immediately Syndrome'.
It occurs when someone thinks a topic -immediately- requires their opinion based off the topic title alone and the person post before ever reading the first post.

It happens a lot...
And that's exactly why the user pointed out how you, and several others, didn't bother even reading the topic at all, and decided to just post anyway.
Yep I did a strikethrough on the first sentence and even underlined the question. Maybe people will finally understand, haha.
In reality nothing happens. If I had a choice I would still choose nothing. Every journey must end. Life is wonderful, death is peaceful, only the transition is hard.
Christians go to hell? I thought it was everyone else.
Depends on the type of Christian. Some think that. Some think everyone goes to Heaven, and Hell is just for angels who fall from grace. If they believe in the book of revelations, they think it doesn't matter what faith you are just that you helped people.
Didn't you know that twistmental79 knows exactly how reality works?
Oh wow, I thought that everyone knew about twistmental. He's like the internet Jesus!
I personally see consciousness as a manifesting property of the universe. Mine just seems to be distinct yo some sort of illusory "self". After I die, that "self" will vanish and "I" would regain only whatever consciousness lingers throughout the universe that I feel I have no access to now. This might mean that there wont be any more thoughts or sensations to experience or it might mean something surprising. Either way, thoughts and experiences will continue to exist and those, as I see it, will just be a part of "me".
lol...
So very close to what I believe... It's eery, because I didn't think anyone else would ever understand such a concept, at least, not anyone I would know anyway...
Edit: Although, I do think I take my views a step or two further...
I believe that all things as we know them in this universe, currently, have 'consciousness' and 'being'. These consciousness are separate from us in physical form, but in actuality they are actually 'one' with us yet we do not realize it because of the physicality, because of 'self'.
In death, we realize the 'oneness' of the universe and all consciousness, and that is when we become part of God, and become one with the universe and all things.
Therefore, we transcend even time and space, and our 'self' and consciousness are part of one and forever.
But consciousness is contained in the brain, and when the brain shuts down when you die, so it goes nowhere and is destroyed.
First of all, you can not prove that... lol.
Nothing in science has currently linked cosciousness to the brain... I mean, it can't do that actually... because if it weren't linked to the brain, then how could we even recognize it then?
Second, that is not the same 'consciousness' I'm talking about. I also doubt it's the one Meta is talking about.
The 'Consciousness' without physical form to me is a 'higher reality'. The 'consciousness' of the brain is a physical adaptation of the consciousness of that higher reality, which confines 'self' to physical form.
To put it in simpler means of understanding... our 'thought' is what exists within our brain, and outside of our brain the 'thought' can still exist but in a much more vague way that can not really be defined by any means of human comprehension.
Edit: And the act of the brain and it's physical consciousness being destroyed is what sets free the inner, or higher, form of consciousness to again merge with the consciousness of all things.
... :smile.gif: I hope I've explained that well enough... probably not, but I tried.

So, you mean consciousness can exist independent of the brain but the brain just 'uses' it, or something like that?

Oh ok, I get it. This is making my head hurt, haha.
What if you get killed by being instantaneously reduced to nothing? Do you still have a NDE?
That is what I wonder. I am presuming it would just be a quick flash of light then nothing.
I don't know. I don't actually believe in it, I was just clarifying what he meant it was.

If people read the whole first post rather than the first sentence they would know that -.-

OBJECTION!
we have no proof that the afterlife exists!
yet we have no proof it does not exist!
you are christian: heaven or hell
you are hellenistic: the underworld
you are atheist: you stop existing
Christians go to hell? I thought it was everyone else.
sorely mistaken
most catholics believe in that
i am a lutheran
and i believe if you were evil in life you will go through purgatory
if you are not purified during purgatory you are sent to hell

You heard that, green and red.
