I've been addicted to a number of things over the course of my life, but my addiction to MMOs holds a special place in my heart. At the moment, I don't play any MMO, but that's partly due to my internet connection and not the fact that I don't want to play any of them.
My MMO career started out quite normal when playing Ultima Online. While, I wouldn't say I was addicted to the game, I was hugely enamored by it. Then I moved on to Everquest, Final Fantasy XI, and then finally to the crown jewels in my opinion, Eve Online and World of Warcraft. I never experienced addiction until I met Eve Online and then to an even greater degree, World of Warcraft. At one point, I played WoW so long, it induced some frighteningly realistic auditory hallucinations. Now, I quit playing Eve about 6 months ago and WoW, over a year ago and never really looked back.
Then, yesterday I stumbled upon a WoW video on Youtube and it tingled my addict senses. ONE five minute long video has now caused me to start downloading this delightfully delicious crack again. Now, I don't think I'll ever be able to fully distance myself from these phenomena. I feel excited and somewhat scared of what is to come.
Don't worry, none of your advice and warnings will stop me, but I was just wondering what MMOs you guys have played and if you got addicted, what do you think made you addicted and what caused you to quit?
WoW, now that it's free. But that shall soon be taken over, like the rest of my waking hours, by Star Wars: The Old Republic.

When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. I don't want your damn lemons! I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!
I used to play WoW, under duress. That is a terrible game, I had to play it because I was the only one who could Main Tank and lead raids....And my guildies knew where I lived.

Ironically enough, it was a TotalBiscuit video I found that sparked my interest again. :smile.gif:
Thanks for the video, watching it now.

Buddy, if WoW and EVE get your inner MMO nerd all hot and bothered then you will never leave your house when the Warhammer 40k MMO comes out.
I would probably write out a will now, because in all likelihood you will starve to death in front of your computer.
Bluhhh. Orcs in space? I think not.

I was thinking more along the lines of a massive theocratic Imperium with a totalitarian government and a xenophobic mindset dropping eight foot tall superhuman soldier wearing powered armor and using automatic rocket-launchers into the battlefield with what can be described as mechanical meteors.
But your robes and light sticks are pretty cool too, I guess.

Hah. We can be cool without compelling strings of words attached.

it all started with FFXI,which was shared between me and my two brothers, but there was a fee or something to make mroe characters which my dad was unwilling to shell out like an extra dollar for another character. That was understandable though, we were pretty much just doing chores around the house to make up for cost of the game. Then i found out about guild wars one day when i was reading the game magazines in barnes&nobles :biggrin.gif: 4 characters and no monthly fee, yes! we quickly use up all four slots and got frustrated because we didnt want to delete out old characters to try out new classes, so then WoW came along with the luxury of 50 characters to an account. hasn't stopped since that day

I didn't catch that last post? I was distracted by my Teutonic Knights in space.
Show me your in-game map. Immediately.

I havent actually spent that much time playing them tbh.
Every now and then I reinstall WoW or Lotro, but I quickly get bored of them.
Its always the same thing: Go to raids to get better gear so you can go to better raids so you can get better gear and so on....

True, but I think the biggest draw for me is the social aspect of MMOs. Adding to that, I enjoy the simple hotkey and cartoon style of WoW.
Most MMOs would be boring as hell if they were single player.

Hasn't he quit?
I believe so, but it was an old video of his.

I agree, the social aspect is the only thing that keeps me coming back to them.
Over the years Ive met some pretty nice people in MMOs.
Which is why I want to see more games like FoM and Eve.
Sadly, FoM has a really small playerbase and Eve is all about spaceships, so none of them appeal to me :S
