But then being so close to large countries would probably cause war, unlike Europe, where every country is small!

When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. I don't want your damn lemons! I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!
It's illegal. We are not a confederation. Also, California is swimming in debt. They might be in a better position to govern themselves in the long run, but they'd have some real troubles at first.
I'll think about California seceding once the tectonic plates actually separate California from mainland USA.
Which will be never. California is part of the North American plate which is embedded more than a mile underneath the ocean. So, unless California climbs out into the ocean somehow it's staying pretty much where it is.
It faces similar, if more man made problems when trying to secede. The rest of the country would never let that happen. California is at the center of US production. Other than food, the only thing we really produce are movies and video games.
What do you base this on? The Constitution was founded with revolution in mind: if the government gets really screwed up like Britain did, you could secede or overthrow. That's what the 2nd Amendment was for, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

1. I thought the debt is owned by the federal government, not the states?
2. I thought Cali was the center of production in the US?
3. They certainly seem pretty rich.

So you admit you don't care what happens to the rest of the states? Which will ultimately affect what the rest of the US thinks of this decision? Are you from California?

No, I'm in Alabama.
But I really don't see the problem. It's not like trade wouldn't continue, Cali has nothing against us. We'd be good allies, just with different governments.
If that doesn't work, how do we have maple syrup? And tortillas?

When the South seceded from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War, they WERE committing a crime. It is not legal to secede. I don't care about your hokey interpretations of the Bill of Rights; this has been case closed for 150 years, and the law is the law is the law.

To put it simply, their budget is 50% higher than what they can pay every year, and their expenditure is 50% more than that. That is a recipe for fiscal disaster.

How were they committing a crime? I thought Lincoln was just doing it for the whole "a house divided cannot stand" thing.
Is it U.S. or international law that you can't secede?

No, I don't think you know how linear time works. AKA, you can't know how the future works. How often are we right about the future? We can't even get next week weather right!

exactly not
I think you meant "not exactly".
Lol.
If any state seceded from the US, it'd be Cali.
But I STRONGLY doubt the US military would let that happen.
FFS, I am obviously wonderful.
You heard that, green and red.

Or, if you want it straight from the government:
http://www.dof.ca.gov/budgeting/budget_faqs/documents/CHART-B.pdf
Notice on the second page for 2011-2012. Total budget: 127,000,000,000. Total expenditure, though? 204,000,000,000. And revenue, from here:
http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/pdf/BudgetSummary/RevenueEstimates.pdf
A mere 85,000,000 for 2011-2012.

I don't think you understand how plate tectonics work.
