I've heard that some people (as part of military training or otherwise) can concentrate on the "white spot" of the pain and get a small mental painkiller, but I think yours is just placebo or natural.
Pain is just telling you something wrong. I'm sure, with practice, you can block it off. There's no way to tell the true limitation of the human race, if there is one. We might be able to fly, but not know how to.
Wushu training teaches of Qi, or life force, it really works in blocking out pain. Really all it is readying your mind for whats going to happen and learning to block out the pain. When you see those guys about to get hit by a bamboo stick or break concrete doing those breathing techniques, it really is just state of mind, also it gets your adrenaline flowing.

I usually just focus a lot on the pain. Hurts for a while but then it dies off slowly. It worked when they were injecting my thumb full of morphine when they were trying to pop it back into place/put the bones back in order (it was popped out of it's place and the bone broken in half, and some small fractures elsewhere). Funny thing is, when they put the morphine in, that's probably where I felt most of the pain. Felt like my thumb was going to explode.
The rest was just almost as bad, but I got used to it after his (the nurse's) second try at fixing my thumb. xD
It also worked when I actually broke the thumb and after a few minutes on the way to the hospital I could stop feeling it.
I can do it if I get cuts too, but if I get headaches or get hit really hard, like dropping something extremely heavy on my foot/slamming my foot on something, I can't manage to make it stop.
There are certain physical practices you can do to help relieve pain.
1st of all, what type of pain?
If you are sore/have a bruise/muscle/deep tissue pain, than massaging that area thorougly often helps a lot.
Taking very deep breaths, and breathing practice helps pain.
If its emotional pain, then I'm sorry. I dont know how to help that except maybe by talking to someone who is willing to listen. Or writing. Writing helps.
I just say to my self "I've felt worse, *****." Then I start laughing because it was usually something I did that was stupid and hilarious that put me into the pain, or I was skating.
Have gym teachers stopped telling boys to "walk it off" when they're hurt? It is an absurd notion but I find that it works. Although... I should note that I've never broken a bone before. That might be a bit difficult to walk off.
Pain is an electrical impulse generated by your nerves so it is in my opinion that it is entirely possible to block out pain.
I also want to note that our bodies are designed to block out a stimulus if it is constant because our bodies are interested in changing stimuli. It is the reason that you might not think your home smells, but someone else comes and visits and thinks it smells horrible. So if a pain is constant it should eventually block out. I also have found that forcing a new stimulus will override the prior one. When I feel a pain I do not like I will tend to pinch myself to block out the other pain as I don't mind the pinch sensation that much.

Back to topic. I figured a long time ago that pain is only mental and depending on how much pain you have you can easily suppress it by just not thinking about it. Every time I hurt myself I'm just like meh, in two minutes it's over anyways, and it's gone already.
Doesn't always work for me, but most of the time it does, and it's useful.
