Do you think modern technology helps or hinders the way humans interact with one another? I'm talking about texting, Facebook, e-mail, instant messaging, and so on. These new communication media make it much easier (and arguably less stressful) to talk to other people, regardless of what form this talking may be. However, the non-candidness of texting or messaging may give people an excuse not to hone their skills in actual face-to-face communication.
This topic is very interesting to me, and I'm not saying that modern technology is ruining our world. (Hell, I'm posting on a forum right now.)
Please discuss :smile.gif:
This thread tears me apart. Literally. I'm being torn apart right now.
On the upside of modernized communication, you get all the things you listed.
On the downside, you have the things listed and an increased amount of criminal activity, or rather, criminal success.
EDIT: Upon light of new insight, I'd say modern communication deserves a thumbs up. Technicalities aside, new, advanced communications are a major factor for moving ahead in other technologies.

Forums = Good.
I supposed we can gather people from around the world to talk on a forum they may go on and off on?
Texting is good for short messages.
No idea about e-mails, you don't need a lot of social skills and you can think out what you're typing, or even delete.
Social technology is helpful when it's used right. Responsibility is important when using mobile devices and some people seem to take that for granted.

Very true. Sometimes people devote all of their social interaction to technology. Enslaved by it, I like to say.
I am typing a message that is sent across the country, and being saved in server to be distributed for people to read across the world. There has never been a better time for Human Interaction.

If a person was so much of a shut-in that all they did is text/check Facebook, they probably wouldn't have any friends to be able to do those things with in the first place. And you don't make many "real" friends by texting random numbers and friending random people.

I'm pretty much enslaved by it and it's crippled my real life social interaction. Take my example and get out with real people when you have the chance. Internet and cell phones are awesome, but they should be used wisely.

It is more of an exchange of information than a full "Human" interaction.
One of my favorite quotes, and I'm not sure where this comes from, is:
"Reality is made of matter. Virtual reality is made of information."
As in, our information is more free, but overall we are not.
Take this example. When texting, you have time to carefully craft a reply to any question or comment, and the ability to substitute actual emotion or physiological response via emoticons (smileys). It is also very easy to ignore what someone says and say that you have to "g2g shower" or "have to study" or something. This, at least to me, raises serious questions of what this artificial, nonspontaneous form of communication is doing or could do to society.
The internet is where the truth comes out. You are anonymous on the internet, you can say whatever you want with no consequences but your own conscience. I say things here I could never say in real life.
So if the the internet is not true "Human interaction", is a major factor of human interaction lying?

The internet is "Incomplete Human Interaction". Yeah actually, that is a major factor of human interaction, but it's not required. I've learned so much valuable social skills (among other things) from the interaction I've done using the internet. I have made many friends using the internet. But, being limited to just typing messages make it harder to understand their feelings, by cues such as body language, voice tone etc.
It does both. It extends human interaction at greater scales while minimizing human interaction at smaller scales. Whether it is good or bad depends on how you look at it.

Of course, lying is a huge part of human interaction.
Anyway, getting back to the original topic, I am not going to try and go either way. I think that a place where you can be totally honest is great sometimes, but usually it's not. I've seen people turned into jaded sociopaths by the Internet, totally unfazed by seeing child porn or something on their screen. Eventually it turns the person sadistic or even self-destructive (well, more often both). I hate seeing that, and I think it sucks, because I know in the "real world," where we have physical interaction with the person, some attitudes are just not tolerated.
The point I became truly disgusted with the type of person I described above was during a scandal on Robloxhq.com. A kid was threatening to commit suicide, and apparently half the ****ing forum cheered him on and told him to do it. The administrator made the responsible decision and called the police. It absolutely horrifies me to see it happening, and I'm glad in a selfish sort of way that I can still be horrified by something like that, but I wish more than anything that it never had to happen in the first place.

Typing today, but soon we might just be posting video instead of blocks of text. no more smilies or sarcasm not translating.
Of course storage capacities and internet speed will need to increase first.

I assure you, prices will triple before quality doubles.

Oh my gosh, that horrible. I've had to deal with sociopaths like that before. Actually, when I used to play "BYOND" games I dealt with it pretty much everywhere.
@illford Doesn't sound practical. I would have a great lawl at spambots and trolls trying to exploit that though.
