Either way, he proved my argument: excepting the parentheses, he done the multiplication first and then division
You never ignore the expression inside a parenthesis. That is always solved first before anything else, including distribution (which is multiplication). It's a fundamental rule of mathematics.
I don't understand why this is continuing to be a dispute. I thought it was made clear that regardless of whether a ÷ or x sign comes first, you solve them from left to right.
You are right. It is quite clear. this guy is being a stubborn mule.

Well... I said 7, he said 1 and you say 9. This is one hell of a mexican standoff...
6/2(1+2) = 6/2+4 ?
Where the hell you got that +4?!
There is only one answer. It's 9 for god sake! This isn't rocket science!!!!!
NOW GUYS LOOK AT THE SCREEN OF YOUR OWN CALCULATOR AND WOLFRAM ALPHA.
You really think that your calculator is lying ?? Or you guys just trolling?
Screw you math teachers ill give my brain for charity right now if the answer isn't 9 (using proper math).

Okay you didn't understood. Let's put it in another way...
Firstly, how much is 2(1+2) ?
Without '6/'.
We understand just fine, what you don't (or do) understand is that by removing parts of the expression changes its meaning. If you're only going to look at part of an expression, you must evaluate it fully and not only half way before inserting it back into the original expression. According to you, multiplication comes first (never mind for now that this isn't the case), therefore we should rewrite the following:
6/2(1+2)
As:
6/(2(1+2))
Or, in RPN:
6 2 1 2 + * /
Which would evaluate to 1, which is wrong for the reasons outlined above. To be absolutely 100% clear, I will specifically answer this question:
Firstly, how much is 2(1+2) ?
It's 6. To fully explain why it's wrong to leave it as 2 + 4, let's also consider that this expression can be written as 2(2 + 1). By your reasoning, this is 4 + 2, therefore, 6/2(1+2) is 7/2.

Yea of course you must to learn how to solve that without calculator. Probably most of us including me enjoys more calculating stuff without any help. If he checks the site or/and the calculator he may realize that the answer actually is 9 and then he really would learn something.
Calculator should be used for checking and for situations where you cant do without it. In this case he should check if the answer is right.

What? With that post you made, you insisted that nothing anyone ever says can convince you, implying you are the ultimate truth on the matter. If you meant that you were leaving the debate, you should have been more straightforward.
Please don't start arguing about a petty matter that has nothing to do with the thread :3

Reducing the 2(1+2) in the equation would still leave us with this:
6/(2+4) as the two are grouped and the parenthesis shouldn't be erased until they are resolved :3

To all of you saying it's 1 or 7 or any real or complex or whatever number that != 9:
-multiplication is the same as division
-addition is the same as subtraction
-It's saying 6/2*(1+2) = 3/2*6=3+6=3*(1/2)*6=9
-you don't agree = you are wrong, no discussion

Well actually, the way he put it, I think he's right.
This is the equation when deconstructed, basically:
6/2*3
Following the order of operations, it equals 9 :3

Yes but the ()s must remain. MUST remain.
And considering the next thing your supposed to do is multiply it equals 1.

The parenthesis doesn't have to remain if you reduced the argument inside to a single digit n-n
6/2(1+2) = 6/2*(3) = 6/2*3 = 9 :3

No, they don't. Parentheses and brackets only exist to indicate that expressions within them should have priority in evaluation. In other words, 6/2*(1+2) is the same as saying x = 1 + 2 and then evaluating 6/2*x. Brackets don't do anything else.
Even if you leave the parentheses behind, it doesn't change the fact that 6/2(3) is the same as 6/2*3 is the same as 9.

6 / 2 (1 + 2)
6 / 2 ( 3 )
here's where it gets tricky. My math teacher told me that in order of operations, * = /, and + = -. So, if we do that,
3(3) = 9.
On the other hand, if we follow PEMDAS literally, we get
6 / 6 = 1.
I think it's the first one.

The answer is 11. Wrote it out by hand, used the calculator on Windows to do the numerical operations (Like 1/101), and checked it on Google.
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
Parentheses, Exponents, Multiply (and) Divide (from left to right), Add (and) Subtract (from left to right)
1/101*(81÷3(6+2/3(1273+383))(1÷3÷3÷3) + 1)
Follow the order of operations inside parentheses, working outwards
EDIT: Bleah, the page didn't like the way I wrote out the steps, had to take them out
1/101*(81÷3(6+2/3(1273+383))(1÷3÷3÷3) + 1)=11 Google agrees with me
On topic:
6/2(1+2)=
Parentheses
6/2(3) (all of us should have agreed on this first step by now)
No exponents
6/2(3)
Multiply and divide from left to right
(6/2)*(3)
6/2=3
(3)*(3)=9
We can also think of division as multiplication of the inverse (Right?)
6/2 would be equal to 6 times one half (Right)
6*(1/2)(3)
Commutative Property of Multiplication, the order in which numbers are multiplied do not matter (Right?)
6*(1/2)(3)=9 (Right!) Google agrees with me again
6/2(1+2)=9
TL;DR
1/101*(81÷3(6+2/3(1273+383))(1÷3÷3÷3) + 1)=11 and 6/2(1+2)=9
