Apparently, some people say that the answer is 1, and others are saying that the answer is 9. Depending on how you view the order of operations, you might distribute first or solve within the parenthesis first, but which is the correct answer? For me, it's clearly 9, but I've had math teachers explain to me that the answer is 1. What the hell.

Distribution only is applied first if the numbers in the parenthesis are unlike terms. In this case, the answer is 1.
Take for example a question such as this: 4(9-X). You would distribute first then.

My friend brandon posted this on facebook. "Okay. the rules of order of operations.
Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
as we were taught since... forever.
So, using those rules, we solve this math problem:
6÷2(1+2)
6÷2(3)
now, we do step two.
3 (3)
9. yes?"
I'm going to have to disagree with that. I believe the answer is 1, because you would do 2+1 then multiply it by 2.

But isn't Distribution technically multiplication? According to PEMDAS, you always solve inside whatever's in the parenthesis before solving anything else. Once you reach MD, it doesn't matter if multiplication or division comes first; you always multiply/divide from left to right.

I'm pretty sure what's in front of a parenthesis has priority over other operations :ohmy.gif:

Mmph. You got me there. I either overthought the question or was just wasn't thinking.

Yep, common knowledge.

6/2(1+2) = 6/2(3) = 6/6 = 1
edit: wrote 3 instead of 2 on accident, blame tiredness :tongue.gif:
Thats it. I got it wrong because I did 6/2(1+2) > 3x3 = 9 Multiplied when I should have divided.

6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
3(3)
9
You don't multiply first if there is division in front of it.
So then I DID get it right.

6/2 = 3 , and 2+1 = 3 , So, (3)(3) = 9. Right?
6÷2(1+2)
6÷2(3)
3(3)
9
ANSWER=9

I'm confused. PEMDAS means that multiplication is before division. So it would be like this.
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
6/6
1
If you multiply first, you would do 3 times 2.
