Most people only listen to it for the beats, learn the lyrics and then believe the singer is cute/hot/awesome/sexy.
I only listen to stuff without lyrics, because most of the **** they put out with lyrics relates to love, partying and sex. Rappers/singers these days are ****ing stupid.
Also, I listen to deadmau5 and wish to know what you have against Techno-listeners.
I listen to Bob Dylan and other Rock n' Roll artists so yes, lyrics mean a ****-a-lot to me. Thats why my fave song is Like a Rolling Stone, it reminds me of myself. I was at the top, then everything went to the ****ing shitter.
It depends on the song. I listen to a lot of Japanese Techno, and usually the lyrics are going too fast to understand. Sometimes, the lyrics are cool, but for the most part, I really like cool melodies and beats.
Ever since I started playing Rock Band 2/3, I now listen to every instrument and word, wondering how hard i would be to play on the guitar/drums/vocals. So, yeah, I guess I do care about the lyrics and music.
However, maybe the music more; I've always loved Ok Go's music, especially White Knuckles.
A song that has good lyrics can be great. Or it could still suck. On the other hand a great song could have terrible lyrics and still be considered good. So I don't think lyrics matter all that much. Lyrics are the icing on the cake.
It's all about the context of the song. Some songs can have no/bad lyrics and be great. Some songs can have horrible/no music and still be great (far less common). It all depends on what the writer is trying to get across and whether it's more of a feel for the situation or if it can be described in words.
For example, I'm a musician, and when I write lyrics, I like to have lines that are witty and apply to my view of what's clever to portray whatever thing I'm writing about. As such, I usually try to focus on good lyrics and then writing the music later, which I have a feeling contributes to my writers block. Conversely, in the same songs, I can have rather dull lines that I just happen to have flow in a way that makes a particular riff seem absolutely amazing.
Bottom line, it all depends on how you view the song in question and what the artist tried to go for in the first place. In the end, it's all up to your interpretation. Nothing matches music for conveying feelings.
I notice bad lyrics, but I don't generally notice good lyrics.
I also prefer my rock music to have the lyrics mixed at about the same level as the instruments(unlike most pop music I hear on the radio, where the lyrics are several decibels above the instrumentation.)
I much prefer good lyrics. When you listen to Rap like Aesop Rock that usually is mostly lyrics with good tunes in the background, you begin to love proper lyrics.
I definitely notice lyrics, but I listen almost exclusively to rock opera, so...kind of defeats the purpose if I don't.

Lyrics are not important to music itself. Lyrics are poetry. Poetry is not music. However, I think lyrics are a good way to express a feeling, but they don't add anything to the music per se.
Perhaps what I respect most musicians for is telling a story without writing it down. Mr. Bungle's The Bends did this. It's a 10 1/2 minute song with (for the most part) no lyrics- just sounds and music.
I'm a musician as well, and i pay almost no attention to lyrics. i'm always trying to figure out how guitar melodies/riffs of songs work, and trying to learn from them to better myself as a guitar player.
also, i listen to techno/trance as well, you'd be surprised what you like if you keep an open mind :tongue.gif:
Not all music has lyrics. But I don't like songs where it's just someone singing and someone bashing guitar chords in the background. If you're going to do that, you may as well just have written a poem.

That's depressing, man. Sorry

Here's an example of a good song with odd lyrics:
